2 GIVN Gospatric I 2 SURN MAC MALDED He paid a large sum of money to William the Conqueror for the earldom, to which he had through his mother some hereditary claim. He took part in the conspiracy against the Conqueror on behalf of his cousin, Edgar the Atheling, the heir of the English kings. When this failed, he fled to Scotland, but later returned and made his peace with the Conqueror. In 1072 however, William turned against him and he fled again to Scotland, where his cousin King Malcolm 111 gave him Dunbar with the adjacent lands Lothian. He visited Rome in 1061 and married a sister of Edmund. Earl of Northumberland, 1067-1072; first Earl of Dunbar, 1072-1075; Lord of Carlisle and Allerdale; visited Rome, 1061.
