Was elected over John Quincy Adams by a popular vote of 647,286 to 508,064 and an electoral vote of 178 to 83. Was reelected 1832 over Henry Clay by a popular vote of 687,502 to 530,189 and an electoral vote of 219 to 49. During his first term 1829-1832 John C. Calhoun served as vice-president, during his second 1833-1837 his successor Martin Van Buren. Called Old Hickory. Andrew Jackson was inaugurated the 7th President of the United States on March 4, 1829. Andrew and his wife Rachel, had no children. But Andrew adopted a nephew of Rachel's, they named him Andrew Jackson Jr.. They later took in another of Rachel's nephews and named him Andrew Jackson Donalson and sent him to West Point. In 1797 Andrew Jackson was elected to the US Sentate.

Married Lewis Robards before she was 18. She was very unhappy in her marriage due to jealosy of Robards in regards to his wife's friendship with a Mr. Short. Finally, he sent for Rachel's brother, Samuel, to remove her from his house. Samuel took her to his mother's house in Davidson County, TN, where Andrew Jackson lived in a nearby cabin on the property. He lived with his friend John Overton. Lewis Robards later told people that he had divorced Rachel. Andrew Jackson heard about the divorce but never checked to ensure the validity of Robards' claim. Andrew Jackson married Rachel Donelson in 1791. Two years later, Robards, in an effort to embarase the Jacksons, announced that the divorce was never persued and that Rachel was living an adultrous life.
