Sir John served both Kings Edward I & II in the Scottish wars. In 1313, he was made Warden of the Marches on the Scottish-English border, as well as Governor
of Scarborough and Malton castles in Yorkshire. In 1320, John came into dispute with Edward's favorites, the Despensers, over the lordship of Gower which was gifted to him by his father-in-law William de Braose. The Marcher lords fed up withthe greedy, unscrupulous Despensers formed a confederation with the Earl of Hereford, the Cliffords, the Mortimers and Thomas of Lancaster. In March of 1321, they made a final stand at Boroughbridge and were defeated by the Royal troops.Lancaster was beheaded. Clifford and Mowbray were drawn by horses and hung at York. Mowbray's body was left hanging in chains for 3 years before the King allowed it to be buried in Friars Preachers in York. His widow Alivia and son John wereimprisoned in the Tower of London. Edward II himself was murdered in 1327 in Berkeley Castle.
