Richard was present at the coronations of King Richard I and King John. He was a leader of the Barons who forced King John to sign the Magna Carta.

Some sources say he died December 30, 1218.
Richard was a descendant of Richard FitzGerald, who was born before 1035 in Normandy, and founded the House of Clare in England. FitzGerald was the eldest son of Crispin, Count of Eu and Brionne, who was a descendant of Charlemagne. He accompanied Willam the Conqueror to England in 1066, and later held 176 lordships and manors. One of these was Clare, in county Suffolk. This became his chief seat and caused him to become known as Richard de Clare.
