Hyrum King was a river-runner. He would go up river, cut logs which were then bound togethe r in a raft and floated to destination. His father was a shinglemaker. Hyrum King grew up he aring and reading the Bible. So he was ready when missionaries came in 1835 and soon baptized , as was his family. He lived in Vermont for 22 years. After his conversion he went to Mass achusetts to earn money for his parents and family to join the saints. After another two year s Hyrum King went home and got his parents and left for Missouri.
On the trek westward his mother and brother died in Indiana. The rest of the family graduall y made their way west. Hyrum King made shingles and ran Bishop Hunter's cattle and dairy. H e made his home near Bingham Canyon in Wight's Fort. In the spring 1857, Hyrum King moved hi s family to Payson. There he helped build community, where he was well liked and respected. H e and his wife took in five other children to raise besides their own. He lived to 93 year s old. (submitted by Lorna Belnap)
