He fought successfully bothagainst the Capetian King of France and Emperor, Henry II, from the latter of whomhe received the Valenciennes in fief, the Burgraveship of Ghent, thelands of Waes and Zeeland. The Count of Flanders thus became a feudatory of the Empire as well asof the French Crown. The French fiefs are known in Felmish Crown Flanders (Kroon-Vlaanderren), the German fiefs as Imperial Flanders (Rijks-Vlaandeeren). He was called The Bearded.
