Nulton, Louis M. b. August 8, 1869 d. November 11, 1954; Admiral, U.S.Navy. Graduated from the U.S.Naval Academy, Class of 1889. Executive officer of Admiral Dewey's Flagship at the battle of Manila Bay in 1898. Participated in the Vera Cruz, Mexico landings,1914 and later commanded the battleship Pennsylvania. Superintendent of the Naval Academy, 1925-1928. Promoted to admiral in 1929 and retired in 1933. Biographical/Historical: Admiral Louis McCoy Nulton was born in Winchester, VA, USA, on August 8, 1869, the son of Col. Joseph A. Nulton and Anna Virginia Clark. At age 16, he was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. On Sept. 5, 1895, he married Minnie Clark Evans. They had two daughters. Nulton served in the U.S. Navy for 48 years, rising to full rank of Admiral in 1929. His excellent performance earned him many assignments in the international arena. He was praised by President Herbert Hoover in a letter for "attain[ing] the highest merit in battle efficiency of any division of its class" when Nulton served in 1929 as Commander of the U.S. Navy Battleship force in the Pacific. For this, he earned the rank of Admiral. After retirement, he and his wife lived in Winchester from 1933 to 1946. Admiral Nulton died November 11, 1954, and was buried in the U.S. Military Academy Cemetery at Annapolis. Bibliography: Quarles, Garland R. Some Worthy Lives.
