Lewis Field was born in Kentucky, and emigrated to this region with his father, making the entire trip in wagons, and landing at Goleonda, where he took up land from the government, paying 1.25 per acre. The tract of 160 acres, which he owned was about the first sold in this locality. From time to time he added adjoining lands to his original purchase, until he found himself possessed of some 640 acres, all of which were located in this county. He is numbered among those who have paved the way to the present prosperity of this region, having overcome and conquered the obstacles and difficulties of pioneer life with courage and fortitude well worthy the emulation and admiration of their descendants. He spent his remaining days on his farm, which was located on section nineteen, the identical homestead on which our subject now resides, and was called to his final reward July 20, 1859, at the age of sixty-two years.
