Roger BROOKE, 16TH GOVERNOR OF MAYLAND
Aka, Robert. He matriculated at Wadhams College, Oxford, 28 APR1618 and received a B.A. 06 JUL 1620 and M.A., 20 APR 1624. Admitted to HolyOrders 25 FEB 1626/27. 16th Governor of Maryland, Acting Governor in 1652. A Member andsometimes President of the Governor's Council. The Colonist of 1650. Was of Whitemarsh, Southampton, England. Emigrated in 1650,arriving 30 JUN of that year. A lineal descendent of King Fergus II. Emigrated on his own ship. Helived only five years after his arrival in Maryland. He brought ten of hischildren with him. He was a Protestant. He was the first Commander in CharlesCounty (Maryland). He sailed into the Patuxent River in his own ship, with his secondwife Mary MAINWARING and his ten children, accompanied by a retinue of 28servants, he was accorded, no doubt, the welcome which the heralding of LordBaltimore naturally insured to him. Charmed by the picturesque shores of thePawtuxent, he sailed many miles farther up (about twenty miles) than anyadventurer had sailed, and chose for his abiding place the two thousand acres, laterknown as the Manor De la Brooke, of which his eldest son, Baker, was createdLord, while his father became Commander of the new county named Charles, inhonor of the King. Roger aka Robert removed to Brooke Place, being right againstDella Brooke. LDS Ancestral File lists him as being named Robert, AFN9G7V-CG. of De la Brooke Manor. The fact that he came to Maryland as a friend of King Charles and wasan adherant and Privy Councillor of the Lord Baltimore and changed hisallegiance to the Cromwellian Party when they deposed Governor Stone in 1652.......
