Went, as a young man, from Kendal to London as an Apprentice to aTallow
Chandler, and after went into the Wars.  Was reputedly an Officer andfought
at the battle of Worcester, 1651, based on family tradition.
Thomas was the convert to Quakerism and both he and his familysuffered
terrible under the persecution of the authorities of the King. He wasmade a
Quaker Minister about 1662.  He was made twice a prisoner in OxfordCastle and
also in the Newgate Prison, London, England.
On one ocassion he was fined 20 pounds for holding a meeting at hishome, on
another Was another meeting att the said Thomas Gilpin's, wjen theofficers
of the law , broke open his door and took away his household goods,eaving him
not a Bed to lie on, nor a Pot to boil his Food in.  He had a familyof five
small children which suffered much through this seizure.  Some Timeafter, as
soon as he had got his Corn in, being about three acres, the Officerscame and
took that alsoe, with two Pigs, in all the value of 11 pounds. AQuaker
