John V GALLUP, CAPTAIN AND INDIAN INTERPRETER
Arrived in America in 1633 aboard the Mary and John, also died 09DEC, South Kingston, Rhode Island. Also born 25 JAN 1620. AKA Jr. Hewas an early settler in Stonington (Connecticut). He was Deputy to theGeneral Court (1664-67) representing Stonington. He was noted as an IndianInterpreter. Selectman of Stonington 1664, 1667, 1668, 1670, 1671, 1673. He was with his father in the engagement off Block Island andafterward he fought in the Pequot War for which he was awarded a grant of 100 acresof land by the Connecticut General Court. When he was of Stonington, hecommanded the Stonington Company. He was over sixty years old when King Philip'sWar broke out. He was later killed in action, (KIA), at the fearful GreatSwamp Fight at Narragansett, 19 DEC 1676 (within the limits of the present SouthKingston, Rhode Island) of the King Phillip's War. He had joined with Captain John Mason, of Norwich, and he led theMohegans (Indians) into battle. In storming the fort, he led his troops bravelyforward and became one of the six Captains who were killed in this fight. He was buried with his fallen comrades, in one single grave, near the battleground. The General Court made several grants to his widow andchildren, in consideration of the great loss they had sustained by his death andfor his public service. Described as an industrious and prosperous farmer. Selectman 1696-98, 1704-1707. He and his wife were members of the Congregational Church, Stonington, Connecticut.
Husband and wife were admitted to the First Congregatinal Church of Stonington, Connecticut 18 APR 1689. He was a prominent citizen.Selectman, Representative to the General Court for 10 years. Resided on the leftbank of the Mystic River on the estate called Whitehall.
