Educated at Queen's College, Oxford, England. Became a Fellow of theCollege. On taking orders as a Priest, he was made one of the masters byCardinal Wolsey. Later in his life he was called the Apostle of The Northand in his own parish as Father of The Poor. He was never married. Bernard was Bishop of Durham; Archdeacon of Durham; Rector ofEssington; Rector of Houghton-le-Spring, Diocese of Durham; founded a grammarschool at Houghton-le-Spring. Was a widely renowned supporter of studentsentering, during and following their school tenure. He was a peacemaker, a strong evangelist. There is a stained glasswindow devoted to this prominent Gilpin in the Durham Cathedral (as oneenters the nave by the north door), it contains three pictures (one) of Gilpingiving away his horse, quelling the feud in Rothbury Church and the foundingof Houghton Grammar School.
