Bartholomew BADLESMERE, BARON SIR

Individual: Bartholomew was 26 when he succeeded his father. He was Govenor of Bristol Castle, and through influence of Gilbert De Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Hereford, and Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln, Bartholomew received a grant from the King for the castle and manor of Chelham in Kent. He was a supporter of Thomas of Lancaster, and one of the magnates who forced the Despencers into exile in 1321. His wife refused hospitality to Edward II's Queen, Isabella, at the castle in Leeds in Kent. In retaliation, the King seized Leeds along with Bartholomew's other castles. Bartholomew was hanged in 1322 for siding with the Barons against the King, and his wife, young son, and daughters were sent to the Tower of London. His widow continued as a prisoner, until, through the influence of William Ros, Lord Ros of Hamlake, and others she obtained her freedom. Individual: Margaret remained a prisoner in the Tower of London, after her husband was hanged until through the influence of William Roos, Lord Roos of Hamlake, she obtained her freedom. She then went to the nunnery of Minoresses near London. She had two shillings a day for her maintenance, to be paid by the sheriff of Essex. She later regained for her dowry some of the deceased Lord's manors. Also d. 1365. She died between 4 Mar 1326/7 and 24 May 1327.
She was an ancestress of John, 14th Earl of Oxford, on whose death in 1526, his three sisters became coheiresses.
