Known as Edmund Ironside. His wife was a sister of Ealdorman Aedric Streona of Mercia He ruled 1016. He was King of England only for a few months. After the death of his father he led the defense of the city of London against the invading Knute Sveinsson and was proclaimed king by the Londoners. See Note Page BIOGRAPHY Eric Delderfield: Upon the death of his father... Edmund Ironside was chosen king by the Londoners. The Witan in Southampton had other ideas, and elected a Dane - Knut, the son of Sweyn. After a series of battles, and despite the victory of Knut at Ashingdon in Essex, a compromise was reached whereby Knut would rule Mercia and Northumbria, while Edmund would hold Wessex; the survivor would succeed to the whole. Knut did not have to wait long; within a few weeks Edmund was dead, and his sons had fled to Hungary. Facts about this person: Record Change October 26, 1999
