Otto I The Great, son of Henry the Fowler of Germany, became king of
Italy in 961, when he succeeded Berengarius II of Ivrea to the throne.
From then on the kingdom of Italy became subject to the Holy Roman
Empire from 961 to 1861. Otto I, called the Great, son of Henry I the Fowler King, succeeded
his father as King of Imperial Germany in 936. He then became Holy
Roman Emperor in 962, and ruled as King/Emperor until 973. He was
succeeded by his son, Otto II.Otto I, the Illustrious, son of Henry the Fowler, and Holy Roman
Emperor, defeated the Magyars who had overrun the Danubian area, and
reorganized the area of Austria as a dependency of the dukes of Bavaria.
Tje Babenberg margraves ruled Austria between 976-1246. Otto I Holy Roman Emperor was crowned 962 in Rome.
He made Magdeburg as his unofficial German imperial capital. He had the Magdeburg Cathedral built at this town.
