Joshua Davis STOCKBRIDGE, son of Samuel STOCKBRIDGE and Mercy DAVIS,was born
in Alton, New Hampshire on 03 December 1874 (NHVRs; V M STOCKBRIDGErecords).
Joshua married Keziah H (HANSON?) EVANS of ALton on 07 October 1832 inAlton
(NHVRs). She was born in ALton in 1809 (03 JUN 1810?), died in 1880,probably
in Gilmanton (g.s.; Harry W EVANS, EVANS Families (1949), 37,typescript, New
Hampshire Historical Society, Concord, New Hampshire. JoshuaSTOCKBRIDGE was a
farmer and he and Keziah first lived in Alton, where in 1840 they were
censused with a household of one male under 5, one male 5-10, one male30-40,
two females under 5, one female 30-40 and one female 40-50.
They were living in Tuftonborough, New Hampshire by 27 September 1844when
Joshua purchased land there from his brother Israel (Carroll CountyDeeds
12:156). On 29 March 1847, Joshua D STOCKBRIDGE, yeoman, and hismother, Marcy
STOCKBRIDGE of Tuftonborough, sold to Smith EMERSON of Alton, onefifth of a
fifty acre parcel his grandfather Israel STOCKBRIDGE had conveyed inhis will
to Joshua's father Samuel (Belknap County Deeds, 12:217).
The STOCKBRIDGES next moved to Sandwich, New Hampshire, soon afterJoshua sold
thirty-three acres in Tuftonborough to his brother and another parcelthere to
Dudley L LIBBEY on 13 September 1847 (Carroll County Deeds 11:331;12:152). On
31 March 1848, Joshua D STOCKBRIDGE, yeoman, his wife Keziah H andmother
Mercy STOCKBRIDGE, all of Sandwich, sold sixty acres of land whichJoshua's
father Samuel had deeded to him and which adjoined, in part, land ofHanson
EVANS (Belknap County Deeds, 29:116). Two more deeds, recorded in1853, show
that Joshua purchased land in Sandwich from Dudley L LIBBEY and soldit to
John M QUIMBY (Carroll County Deeds, 23:72, 114).
By 1860 the STOCKBRIDGES had moved to Gilmanton. Joshua and Keziahwere buried
there in the Smith Meeting House Cemetery.
It seems that there might have been a child between Charles Oliver andJane. It
needs more research.(JFN/1979)
