Ozem DOWST
Aka Osem, Osn, Osen, Osam, Osum, etc. Also aka, DOWSE. Check alsothe possibility that Dowst is a diminutive of the French surname,D'aoust. They are pronounced exactly the same. The given name Ozum is reportedto be an indian name by (LDS) Sister Tina Wilson (of Big Lake, Alaska) whohas done extensive research on this family. Aka Osem, Osn, Osen, Osam, Ozem, etc. Osum is reportedly an Indianname. I believe the surname probably originates in the French and later, French/Canadian surname D'aoust or De Aoust or Daoust (JFN,1996). Also shown as bring born; Epsom, Merrimack, New Hampshire. Cause of death given as; Dry [Gangrene; unsure of spelled word] of thefoot, contributing cause; ulcer on toe, duration; three months. He is buried in a the Mc Clery Cemetery on Center Hill Road in Epsom,New Hampshire. He lies with his wife Martha A and his son, George W Dowst. From the road, the plot is in the section to the right against the fence, nearly under a pine tree at the fence-line. There is a single stone with allthree names upon it.(1996,JFN) Source includes, but is not limited to: Ancestral File and the IGI, International Genealogical Index, both resource systems developed and solely owned by The Church of JesusChrist of Latter Day Saints. An American Indian of the Penobscot Tribe. Penobscot Tribalheadquarters are at Indian Island, Maine, but they're of no help. I contacted them andtheir representative treated my query as if we're Indian wannabees.Obviously Glen Starbird had never been on a vision quest. The Penobscot arepart of the Abenaki Federation. All the Indians of Maine were, at one time, refered to as Abenaki. It is possible to believe that our Martha is related to the later oneshown in the LDS IGI as; Martha GRIFFIN (F), DOB 05 AUG 1866 at ChichesterTwp., Merrimack, New Hampshire. Father; Harrison GRIFFIN (no mother listed).Note that Chichester is quite close (geographically) to Deerfield (NH). Seebelow for the recorded Temple work for this possible descendent.. Baptised: 12 MAR 1977 AZ Endowed: 15 APR 1977 AZ Sealed to Parents: 10 JUN 1977 AZ In an early letter from the family, some of the text was lost becausethe church PAF program (which this record was originally recorded in)doesn't allow notes editing in any normal manner. It said partially; At the Y of the road in Epsom, New Hampshire leading up to the oldDOWST farm, is buried Martha Griffin, an indian squaw, killed at that spot, she is related to us about three generations back (writes a relative). One of the GRIFFIN boys married her. To make it short, you can say,you are descendents of the ABENAKI, PENNACOOK tribes on Caroline L DOWST ROBYside of the family. Indian tribes (as compiled) related to us ALGONQUIN? (spelledALCONOIAN in original record) ABENAKI Confereracy - PENNACOOK Federation SHAWNEE,CHEYENNE, ARAPHO (others), PENOBSCOT, AGAWAM, NORRINOGENOCK (NORRIOGEWOCK?),MERRIMAC, PASSAMAQUODDY, NASHUA, SOUHEGAN, WAMESIT, WINNIPESAUKEE. New record source: Mrs. Tina Wilson, Box 520633, Big Lake, Alaska99652; Telephone (907) 892-8153. Sister Wilson had done extensive discoverywork on the Ozum Dowst-Martha Griffin family going in both directions. Relayedto us by Ms. Joanne Wasson, 167 South Road, Deerfield, New Hampshire 03037. From this wonderful new source, we learn that our Martha was aninmate at the New Hampshire Hospital for The Insane for the last three (plus)years of her life. She is recorded as having died there and then having beenburied in the Epsom Town Cemetery with Osum and the other Dowst Family. Copiesof those records are to follow, from Sister Tina Wilson in Alaska. From the new records: She is recorded as having died (a widow) in the New Hampshire StateHospital, aged 79 years. She was an inmate for 3 1/2 years. Cause of deathgiven; arterio sclerosis. Contributing cause; Senile Dementia. Her parents were described as having been inmates at the DeerfieldCounty Farm. She is also described, in the official record, as being ofPennicock Indian ancestry. She is buried in the Mc Clery Cemetery on Center Hill Road in Epsom,New Hampshire. She lies with her husband Ozem,Sr. and her son, George WDowst. From the road, the plot is in the section to the right, against thefence, nearly under a pine tree at the fence-line. There is a single stone, which I have viewed, with all three names upon it. (1996,JFN) The Epsom (New Hampshire) Town Cemetery Records are in the charge ofBeverly and Roland La Fleur, TEL (603) 736-9028. Her body was taken to Epsom for burial. She was described, inadditional public records, as a Penncock Indian Princess. NOTE* The common misrepresentation of a woman as a Princess becamethe practice AFTER contact with the Awanoots (white man). They construedthat a man who was a Chief equated to that as being the same as a King. Itfollowed that since the daughter of a King was a Princess, so must be thedaughter of Chief. This is just another example of the endless distortionsattributed to the culture of the Original People by the civilized white man, socalled. (JFN,1996) Additional data may (?) be obtained from the two volume work, entitled; The Roby Family, by William Grafton Roby, Jr. ($ 131.50, #R509, HeritageBooks.
