The Burns Times-Herald is published in Burns, Oregon The Burns Times-Herald Neoma E. Russell Published: July 21, 2004 Neoma E. Russell, 90, died July 7. She was born May 8, 1914, in Gothenburg, Neb., to George Murray Davis and AnnaCharlotta (Hack) Davis. A memorial service was held Saturday, July 10, at the Christian Church of Burns. Officiating were Mel Pedersen, Church Elder, andDan Russell, grandson of Neoma Russell and a student at Denver Seminary. Neoma's family moved from Nebraska to Grandview, Idaho, to Nampa, Idaho, and back to Grandview where she graduated from high school in 1932 as the class valedictorian. She and Ted Russell were married Sept. 22, 1932, in the first wedding ceremony performed at the Julia Davis Park in Boise, Idaho. The couple moved to Hines in 1935, and in 1936, Ted was employed by the Hines Lumber Company until his retirement in 1978. During Neoma's working years, she sold Avon products and greeting cards, worked at the Hines Food Market and Felt's Jewelry in Burns, and operated the Burroughs accounting machine for the HinesEmployees Federal Credit Union. She worked as a study-hall clerk and assistant to the special reading teacher at Burns Union High School. Her volunteeractivities included working at the Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop at Harney District Hospital. She also worked in the Head Start Program and the 4C programat the Christian Church of Burns. She chaired the volunteers serving meals atthe senior center for several years. Neoma was also a talented amateur artist with several of her paintings winning ribbons at the Harney County Fair. She enjoyed bingo, playing cards and working crossword puzzles. Neoma was very active in the Christian Church of Burns, serving in several capacities including chairing the worship study program. This church was a special place forher, as she could view the stained-glass windows dedicated to her husband, Ted, and son, Randy. Neoma was a resident of Hines for 69 years and was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Edwin W. (Ted) Russell. Neoma has twosurviving sons: Jim, now living in Salem and Scott, now living in Eugene. Neoma was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Ann, in 1934 and son, Randall Ted, in 1965.
