CARLTON L. GREEN. Very few citizens of Waupaca County still
living can carry their recollections back, over sixty years in
this part of Wisconsin. Oneof the men who can do so is Mr.
Carlton L. Green, of Farmington Township. Mr.Green has occupied
one farm in that locality nearly sixty years, and is now in his
eightieth year of age.
He is a native of Michigan, born in the villageof Rochester, in
Oakland County, July 27, 1837. He is of old American family and
of sturdy, patriotic stock. His parents were Benjamin F. and
Cynthia (Denison) Green. Benjamin Green was born at Bennington,
Vermont, the scene of one of the great victories of the American
troops during the Revolution. His birthoccurred August 8, 1804.
When four years of age his parents, William K. Greenand wife,
removed to Chenango County, New York, and his father died there.
Benjamin F. Green was married in New York to Miss Cynthia
Denison, who was bornin Ontario County, of that state, March 1,
1802. Miss Denison was a daughter of Asa Denison. Mr. Carlton L.
Green among all his possessions cherishes most a"grandfather's
clock." This clock, which stands eight feet high, and is one of
the few examples of the old clocks of that kind still to be
found in Wisconsin, belonged to his maternal grandfather, Asa
Denison. It has been steadily ticking out the time since 1806,
and has told the hours of the day for more than three
generations of people.
About 1834 Benjamin Green and wife went to Michigan and were
pioneers in Oakland County. He was a millwright by trade, and he
found plenty to do in that line while living at Rochester,
Michigan. He remained in that state about seven years and then
returned to New York. In 1858 the family came to Waupaca County,
Wisconsin. Benjamin Green bought the farm now owned and occupied
by his son Carlton L. Benjamin Green died there in 1879,and his
wife in 1886. He was a democrat in politics, and his wife was an
active member of the Presbyterian Church. They had three
children: Jerome B., whodied at Stanley, Wisconsin, May 31,
1915; at the age of eighty four; Mariett Elizabeth, who died in
infancy, and Carlton L.
Carlton L. Green was still a young child when his parents
removed from Michigan back to New York and grew upin that state
and acquired his education in Ontario County. He was just twenty
one when he came with his parents in 1858 to Waupaca County. He
remained onthe old homestead, and after his father's death
became its owner. There for ahalf century he has followed
general farming and stock raising, and has alwaysenjoyed
financial independence. He has made many improvements on the
land, including a good set of buildings.
Mr. Green has figured much in the public affairs of Farmington
Township. He was supervisor, chairman of the board two years,
clerk of the township eight years and assessor for seven years.
He is a democrat.
On May 12, 1861, he married Miss Cordelia S. Mynard. Mrs. Green
was born in Courtland County, New York, December 3, 1842, a
daughter of Martin T. and Harriet C. (Ford) Mynard. Her father
was born in Connecticut, in 1807, andher mother in Courtland
County, New York, in 1814. The Mynards were also amongthe early
arrivals in Waupaca County. On November 2, 1855, they reached
thiscounty and soon settled on a farm in Dayton Township. They
acquired forty acres of wild land there, and Mr. Mynard was
engaged in its cultivation and improvement the rest of his life.
He died in 1877 and his wife in 1882. The Mynardchildren were:
William Henry, who died when about four years of age; Timothy
Irving, Cordelia S., Martha Malvina and Effie Jeanette.
Mr. and Mrs. Green have no children of their own, but have an
adopted son, Francis William, who wasborn September 12, 1867.
