Posted by: FARNSWORTH One-Name Study
        Date: July 04, 1999 at 12:15:41    of 333

The One-Name Study is delighted to advise the following information to all Matthias descendants, following in depth research in original registers and transcripts of registers made in the 1930s.
1. Grandfather of Matthias was Elizeius FARNWORTH, born January 1561/2 in Eccles, Lancashire, ENG

2. Grandmother of Matthias was named either Margreta or Margareta. The Christian name and surname were almost indecipherable even under a strong magnifying glass. She was baptised at Eccles parish church in the summer of 1564.

3. Elizius and Margreta married in September 1582 in Eccles parish church.

You may feel that this information is already around on familysearch.com, but we do not necessarily accept the LDS indices, preferring to check out the original registers where possible. The original transcribers of the Eccles church registers have our utmost admiration as they were really hard to read, even under infra-red light. Patrice Farnsworth Sessions, Co-Ordinator of FARNSWORTH and variants One-Name Study.

Pam Farnsworth   7-7-04  attachment
The story of the Phaneuf family could start with these words: Once upon a time... Adventure mingled with feelings give to this patronyme an unique flavor. It starts with the birth of Matthias in England, in the small town of Farnworth near Manchester. Of Anglican faith, he is influenced as others by the stern religious precepts that drive him to join the Puritans. One can see him aboard the Mayflower, reaching the Atlantic coast in December 1620, but considering his age, this is unlikely. Nevertheless, Matthias Farnsworth lives in America around 1628.
It is in Lynn, Massachusetts, that he first settles, and then moving with his family to Groton, Massachusetts. Weaver at first, he becomes land-clearer, encroaching on the forest to gain farmland in order to make a living for his three children born of a first marriage and seven others of his second marriage with Mary Farr. Matthias dies in 1689, followed by his wife in 1717.
To follow the track of the Phaneufs, it is necessary to focus on Matthias, second child of the first Matthias. Matthias II is born in Lynn in 1649 during his father's first marriage with a woman whose name is still unknown. In 1681, he marries Sara Nutting who bears him at least five children
Among these, a third Matthias, born in Groton on August 6, 1690. Toward 1700, the family lives in the vicinity of Deerfield (in fact in Groton) Massachusetts. At that place, it is attacked by surprise in one of the numerous Canadian raids against New England villages. On August 11, a teenager is captured by the Indians.
This teenager is Matthias III, son and grandson of the Matthias Farnsworth. He doesn't read nor write. Furthermore, he doesn't speak French nor the language of the indian tribe that adopts him. The child's fate seems to arouse the interest of the French who make attempts to purchase his freedom. In doing so, they have two goals: convert him and, if possible, integrate him to their society.
The priests of the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Montreal obtain Matthias's freedom. On January 10, 1706, he is baptized. His godfather is Claude de Ramezay, governor of Montreal, and his godmother is Élisabeth Souart, wife of Charles Le Moyne de Longueuil. To his forename is added his godfather's. The patronyme undergoes its first distortions: Farnsworth becomes Farneth.
In October of the same year, Mathieu-Claude Farneth asks for his letters of naturalization concurrently with "Jean Thomas Charpentier, English; Louis-Marie Strafton, gunsmith; Jean Laha, farmer; Paul Otés, shoemaker; Guillaume James, farmer; André Fray, farmer; Jean Uss, farmer, Jean Making, farmer; Guillaume Straylord, farmer; Jean Ohe, farmer; Thomas Hurt" and others.
The documents rescued from oblivion in 1912 by Brother Elie, teacher at Mont Saint-Louis College, as well as researches done by descendants of Matthias-Claude Farnets, show the ancestor being given, on July 19, 1711, a first grant of land by his adoptive Gentlemen of the Seminary and more especially the priest Messire François Vachon of Belmont.

Hi Pam,
      Mary Farr could have been married prior to marriage to Matthias. I sure do agree with you that varification needs to done before a line is accepted as truth. There is so much false information floating around.
      The following is of interest...picked up in ancestry.com Are you a subscriber to ancestry? I've gotten so much information from that site....really helpful.

Ellie,
   That fits --- I just haven't concentrated on Mary FARR at all -- had her parents, etc. sitting in some other notes..(Ohhhhhh ..... Neverrrrr... Minnddddd..........)
BUT -- Matthias' first 3 children were born in England:
He was married the first time in England to Dorothy Robinson (according to information sent to me) . He came from England with his wife and 3 children. Dorothy died soon after their arrival (she d. 1652) and he then married Mary FARR. I keep asking for "proof" -- haven't seen it yet, but here's what I have:
   1) SR. MATTHIAS2 FARNSWORTH (RICHARD1 FARNWORTH) was born July 20, 1615 in
Eccles, Lancasterhire, England, and died January 21, 1687/88 in Groton,
Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA. He married (1) DOROTHY ROBINSON. She
died Aft. 1652. He married (2) MARY FARR Abt. 1654 in Lynn, Essex County,
Massachusetts, USA, daughter of GEORGE FARR and ELIZABETH STOWERS. She was
born January 16, 1633/34 in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts,USA, and died
March 07, 1716/17 in Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA.
Burial: January 21, 1687/88, Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA

              "George Ott"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ALSO: [Faneuf.GED]
          Farnsworth family arrived in America about 1628.
          In 1655 we find Mathias Farnsworth living in Lynne (near Boston). Protestant by  religion and weaver by trade he married for a second time to Mary Farr who gave him 8 children. Later moved to Groton Ma, where he was one of the Pioneer  settlers and founding fathers of the town.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BIOGRAPHY: Matthias settled in Lynn, Massachusetts, and then moved with his family to Groton, Massachusetts.
He was a Weaver at first, then became a land clearer, encroaching on the forest to gain farmland in order to make a living for his three children born of a first marriage and 7 others of his second marriage with Mary Farr.
Matthias died in 1689, followed by his wife in 1717.

~~~~~~~
From "One Name Study"
2a) The following records are from the original register of the Church of St.Mary, Eccles, : " Matthias was born on 20 July 1615 in Eccles, son of Richard
Farnworth and Elizabethe Marshe (married 12 Jan 1608). He was the grandson of Elizeius
ffarnworth, (baptised Jan 1561/2) and Margreta (), who married in September 1582." The
parish church of Eccles lies four miles to the west of Manchester, in the midst of a huge parish
bounded by Manchester, Prestwick, Radcliffe, Bolton, Leigh and Winwick, the southern limit
being the River Irwell.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I also read (now where did I put that?????) that Matthias' daughter Elizabeth, married her cousin -- James Robinson, son of her mother's brother...)

So-- Hmmm, I say And another HMMMMM...wish I could find a record of his first marriage. Everyone who sends me information cites "Farnsworth Memorial" -- since I don't have it (and, remember? This isn't 'my" family here -- can't justify buying it)...can't say for sure if Dorothy is mentioned there.

Also - I keep finding reference to Matthias marrying in England to an "Elizabeth _______" --- which I don't want to even think about, nonetheless, I have seen it several times...

Ancestry.com has good information -- I joined a while back, but it's time to renew. I hate their format --but lots of information is there, you're right.

I know you've probably seen everything I am sending --- just wish I could find that elusive "proof".....in a way, it will be nice getting back to "my own" puzzles...

"Samuel Farnsworth, the eighth child was born 8 October 1669 in Groton, Massachusetts. He married 12 Dec 1706 to Mary WHITCOMB, Daughter of Josiah of Lancaster and widow of Simon Willard who died in 1706.
       He lived in Groton early in life and his mother lived with him after his father's death. She left him by her will, her "Great Bible." He appears to have been the mainstay and reliance of his mother during the twenty-eight years that she lived after the death of her husband.

       Samuel became an early settler of "Turkey Hills" now called Lunenburg. The date of his death is unknown, but as his will is dated 9 June 1727 and
proved 1 Aug 1730 and Josiah Williard was appointed guardian for his son, Stephen, then in his fifteenth year, 17 Feb 1730 so that probably he was then recently dead. He was admitted to the church in Groton 27 July 1718."

I was born Janice Farnsworth Feb 7, 1936 dau of Clayton Dexter Farnsworth and mother Irene.

We descend from Benjamin Farnsworth and Mary Prescott of Groton, MA

Benjamin was son of Matthias Farnsworth, a first proprietor of Groton, MA and his wife, Mary Farr. Mary Prescott was the dau of Jonas Prescott, son of John Prescott, founder of Lancaster, MA

The third generation of my line went to NH and subsequent generations to VT where my line stayed until my Grandfather left VT for Rhode Island. My father was born here and so was I and my only sibling, Nancy. And here we are, still in R.I.
