THE HOLDEN FAMILY HISTORY" From Wm. Fred Holden, 1415 No.24th St., Clarksburg, West Virginia 26301 by correspondance Oct 3, 1977 with Eleanor Law Johnson, c/o 530 S. 4th St.,Las Vegas, NV 89101."Alexander and Benjamin who migrated from England in the mid to late 1700's. Originally they settled in New Jersey but neither tarried long. Benjamin moved to Ohio and appears to have remained there until his death. Some of his children as adults came southward to settle in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia).
Alexander did not accompany his brother to Ohio but moved to Barbour County, Virginia. He married Sally Chamberlain, of England, and settled on an 800 acre farm given to them by Sally's parents. According to one source, Alexander died in Ohio (note: Licking County,Ohio) in 1832, at the age of 68. If accurate, he was born in England in the year 1764.. Knowledge of Alexander's descendants is lacking except for two sons:
John Chamberlain Holden, born 15 June 1791 and
Lewis Holden....birth date unknown who died 2 April 1818.."

OBITUARY OF SUSAN HOLDEN WIFE OF JOHN C. HOLDEN: Clarksburg Genealogical Society....Selected West Virginia Obit 1934-1937...Copy in my possession..."LEMUEL D. HOLDEN, father of John C. Holden, was a son of Peter W. Holden, an outstanding member of the pioneer family and long a Baptist minister, who was born October 12, 1793 in New Jersey and came with his father,, Benjamin Holden's father to Turkey Run of Elk Creek, near what is now Norwood and settled in 1798 on land the latter had purchased. Benjamin Holden's father, Benjamin, as well as himself and a brother were American soldiers in the Revolutionary War." My note: This record seems to indicate that Benjamin Holden's father was a Benjamin. Still doing more research to clear this all up.

Spouse: Ann Derumple.....(possible for wifes name).

Wm. Fred Holden, 1415 N. 24th St., Clarksburg, W.Va. Holden Family History
Mentions: "John C. Holden was married December 20, 1813 to Grace Holden. She was the daughter of Benjamin Holden and Jemima Holden (formerly Jemima Derumple of New Jersey). Apparently John and Grace were cousins though this is nowhere stated. Grace was born Nov. 10, 1790. She died May 16, 1819. There appears to be no record of any children of this marriage except one daughter, Sally Holden, born July 4, 1815, died April 25, 1832. After Graces death John C. Holden married Prudence Kittle for his second wife, Dec or Nov 3, 1819. She was the daughter of Abraham Kittle. She was born April 24, 1801 and died Sept 4, 1869, at about 4PM at age 68." etc..

Ellie,
Boy, what an elegant hotel. Right up there with the best. In Cleveland no less. Yes, I agree that we should pursue the Hollenden angle. Mom said that the name - as I mentioned yesterday - was Hollenden in the Netherlands, but was changed to Holden in England. The Hollendens moved from the Netherlands to England on their way to America.
Love,
Mary

HISTORY:
1 Nov 1974 I received a letter from Margaret Holden Muller with a photocoy of an old letter from Genova Law (my grandfather's sister) to a cousin...stated L.E. Holden of Cleveland, Ohio (note: found a history on L.E. Holden in Cleveland History...now in my possession. He was a very prominent man, an educator, later in mining in Salt Lake City and very wealthy) was going to see to the publishing of material another Holden of Hyattsville, Maryland had researched...England and Holland 1)Richard Holden 2)Justinian 3)Ebenezer 4)James 5)Benjamin
6)Pearson Bunyan Holden....name before William the conqueror was Hollenden...changed to Holden. L.E. Holden built a fine hotel in Cleveland and named it the Hollenden in honor of the old name. Note: I have seen the Holden Family book in library in Los Angeles and in Salt Lake. At present have not been able to tie in my Benjamin to this family. It may need additional looking into...note: This is definetely a clue to follow.
8-7-99 note from some research I did in Salt Lake...In Pilby books...set 1 v.2 there is a
Holden, James n.a.(no age I think) America 1763 1222 p133 Source: Coldham English Convicts in Colonial America Vol. 1-2....now I suppose that is a possibility. I'll send it to Jane Hodgson and see what she thinks.

FAMILY RECORDS OF WEST VIRGINIA FHL 163771 Salt Lake City: "Benjamin Holden was the earliest settler of the Holden family in Harrison County, West Virginia. He came from New Jersey in pioneer days and settled on Elk Creek, above Clarksburg, where he spent the remainder of his days. He was a stonemason by trade."

"Selected West Virginia Obituaries 1934-1937"..Harrison County Genealogical Society, Clarksburg, West Virginia. Copy in my possession.
Obituary of Susan Holden, wife of John C. Holden (Benjamin,Peter,Lemuel) gives a genealogy of Holden family. Indicates that Benjamin's father may have also been a Benjamin. Needs varification. Mentions both Benjamins in Rev.War.

THEORY REGARDING THE PLACE OF BIRTH OF BENJAMIN HOLDEN
A Benjamin HOLDEN served in Revolutionary War from Hunterdon Co NJ 1790
Federal Census shows a Benjamin HOLDEN in Essex Co NJ where a number of
Derumple families also live (family lore says Benjamin's first wife was a Derumple and the HOLDENs came from NJ) (There was also a Derumple family and 2 Benjamin Holdens in Mass.)
1850 Federal Census shows sons Benjamin and Peter W. were born in NJ
Early land records link Benjamin and Alexander with numerous deeds for land on Elk Creek in Harrison County, VA. They seem to be brothers. Early church records of Center Branch Baptist Church frequently refer problem matters for solution to Bros. Benjamin and A.C. Holden. Alexander bought and sold land 3 times to people from NJ or moving back to NJ.
William Chamberlain of Sussex Co NJ; Adam Hope of Hunterdon Co NJ; and then a 3rd where William Chamberlain moved back to NJ. These all seem to link the brothers to NJ.
The conclusion I draw from all these facts is that our Benjamin Holden is probably from NJ and possibly from Sussex or Essex or Hunterdon	Counties.
He may be descended from the Cape May Holdens or he may be descended from Holdens who came from England closer to the time of the Revolution in America.
The next step is to examine the land records in the 3 counties in NJ.

More history from Fred Holden, Clarksburg, W.VA "Benjamin and Alexander came from England in the mid to late 1700'S. Originally they settled in New Jersey but neither tarried long. Benjamin moved to Ohio."

( My note and correction to history: Pearson B. Holden's father lived in Harrison Co.,Va. . Benjamin's will was located in Harrison County,Va records (Will Bk 4) and he is buried in Center Branch Church Cemetery, Harrison County (near Clarksburg). So, it was Alexander that moved from Harrison County after 1800 (He is in 1800 Harrison Census) to Ohio about 1804 or so.) Alexander is serving in the Ohio House by 1808.

Benjamin was one of first settlers in Harrison County, Virginia and many of his decendants resided there..my direct line moved into Ohio...Pearson B. Holden (son of Benjamin Holden and 2nd wife, Anna Lambert)..

More of Fred Holden history:
"Some of his children, as adults, came southward to settle in Harrison County,Va.." (My note: Many of his decendants are found in Harrison County records).
"Alexander did not accompany his brother to Ohio but moved to Barbour Co.,W.Va. (Note: Benjamin did not go with his brother to Ohio). He was married to Sally Chamberlain , of England, and settled on an 800 acre farm given to them by Sally's parents. According to one source, Alexander died in Ohio on September 25, 1832, at the age of 68." (My note: In Licking County, Ohio Probate records...lists his will 29 Oct 1832, with name of wife as Sally and a Mahlon and Wilson Holden and a Jacob Swisher. If accurate, he was born in 1764...possibly in England
History continued: . " Knowledge of Alexander's descendants is lacking except for two sons:

John Chamberlain Holden, born June 15, 1791.
Lewis Holden (birthdate unknown) suppose to have died 2 Apr 1818. Birthdate not known.
John C. Holden was married Dec. 20, 1813 to Grace Holden. She was the daughter of Benjamin Holden and Jemina Holden (formerly Jemima Derumple of New Jersey."
"Apparently John and Grace were cousins though this is nowhere stated. Grace was born 10 Nov 1790. She died 16 May 1819. There appears to be no record of any children of this marriage except one daughter, Sally Holden, bn 4 July 1815, died 25 Apr 1832" (There is more information in my files.)

Some of this information needs varification...note: It is interesting to note that Benjamin's wife's name here is Jemima Derumple of New Jersey...Believe he had more than one wife. 1- Jemima,2- Anna Lambert and 3- Margaret (who is mentioned in his will).
