                   OBITUARY NOTICE FOR HIS MOTHER-IN-LAW

Tommie Brett's letter in notes under wife, Zelpha I. Martin....
part of letter: I checked the 1910 Census and found a Zelpha Hewitt and husband Albert Hewitt married 9 years and one daughter Mildred Hewitt age 16. Albert had been married before and Mildred was his daughter. The 1920
Census had Zelpha Hewitt Hotel Proprieter, son Whitney age 29 widowed and daughter Mildred single. They lived in Cascade CO. So now I have found her and I have no ideas how she fits into our family.
One of the postcards memtions Clifford Beebe died in Cascade CO. This was the brother of Lena but doen't explain Zelpha. Another postcard showed a picture of a rather substantial frame house and Zelpha had written
"This is my house as it looks now in 1922"
Last Memorial day week end Ken and I were meeting friends in the Cascade - Colorado Springs area and had an extra couple of hours and went to Cascade to see if there was a cemetery and maybe, if so, I could find Cliffords
grave and more clues. Well, we went into one of the tourist shops and I asked about a cemetery. None there. People were buried in Colrado Springs or other larger places. I was informed that there was a small book published on the history of Cascade and found the $5.00 book in another shop and in this book was a picture of the Easthorne Hotel' we drove past the house and it is now a B & B and I went in and asked if a Zelpha Hewitt ever lived in the house. The present owner said yes from 1913 to 1945 and in the parlor was large very large blow up of a picture of Zelpha and her son Whitney. I have a postcard of the same woman with her step daughter Mildred. Mildred was probably under 10.

"A.S. Hewitt dies from Injuries"
"A.S. Hewitt, 54, proprietor of the East Home (Eastholm) Hotel at Cascade and for 12 years a resident of that place, died at 9:30 o'clock last night at a local hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident Monday night. Funeral arragements will be made later.
The accident occurred when the automobile which Mr. Hewtt was driving turned over a short distance east of Cascade. He was pinned beneath the car, but was rescued by passing motorists. A boy who had been riding the running board jumped when the machine toppled and was unhurt.
Mr. Hewitt is survived by his wife, Mrs. Zelpha Hewitt and a daughter, residing at Cascade, and three sons.
An inquest probably will not be held."

E-mail from cousin, Tommie Brett (tsbrett@aol.com) in Denver, CO 10/17/1999
Hi Ellie,

I have found another of the descendents of Edna and Oliver. It is a rather convoluted saga. I have in my possession a travel journal done in 1930 by my great grandmother Lena Estelle Beebe Elwell the daughter of Lucy
Minerva Farnsworth. She went to Portland to visit Uncle Nathan Farnsworth the brother of Lucy and the to San Francisco and then to LA and to Colorado where she visited " Colorado cousins" one being Zelpha who collected her at the train depot and took her to her home through the "beautiful Ute Pass" I later reread some old postcards and found a series written from 1909 to 1922 between the two women. Those written from Colorado were Cascade or Colorado Springs.
Now postcards have no return addresses and no last names so I was stumped. I assumed that Zelpha was a Beebe or and Elwell as I had found the name in each of these families,l however, the dates didn't match and so I was
still stumped. So I had a file called " Colorado Clues" which I set aside, hoping to fine out who the "Cousins" were at some time. I volunteered to do research for the Colorado Genealogical Society hoping to find the resources to search my few clues. Well on my first project I found out who she was although it was another fortunate incident which lead me to how we are related to her. First I reread the postcards and found something which I had totally missed. In faint pencil on one of the postcards was the name Zelpha Heriot or Hewit. So, armed with this I checked the 1910 Census and found a Zelpha Hewitt and husband Albert Hewitt married 9 years and one daughter Mildred Hewitt age 16.

Ellie we have to leave to meet friends for the football game. I will hit the send button and finish this when I get home this evening.
