Does anybody have any additional information on ROBERT MAYNARD, the slayer of Blackbeard the Pirate? Apparently, there is a strong oral tradition among the descendants of the 4 Maynard brothers including James, Christopher Columbus, William & Gibson who were in the Western North Carolina region during the late 1700's. This oral tradition suggests that Robert is the father of these 4 Maynard brothers. Any information is appreciated, no matter how insignificant.

askjeeves.com BLACKBEARD, THE PIRATE AND MAYNARD....
found information on Blackbeard, the Pirate.....and Maynard.....
The lure of piracy was too much for Edward Teach, and he soon fell back into sailing the North Carolina and Virginia coast looking for ships to plunder. He had settled on Ockracoke Island, near Cape Hatteras, as his outpost. It was here that Lieutenant Maynard of the Royal Navy found Blackbeard anchored at his favorite spot on the south side of the island. His ships crept up on Blackbeard's and a fierce battle broke out between them. Both sides took heavy casualties, and eventually Blackbeard was killed in battle overwhelmed by the training and firepower of the Royal navy. Blackbeard's head was cut off and his body thrown overboard where legend has that it swam around the ship several times before sinking. The skull was displayed as a trophy on Mayard's arrival in Bath and in Virginia.

google.com.........Blackbeard the Pirate and Robert Maynard....http://www.nps.gov/calo/blackbeard.htm
Interesting story.....online..
Lieutenant Robert Maynard was given the charge of leading the two ships. He was on the larger ship the "Jane" and his assistant on the smaller ship the "Ranger". The ships headed down the coast from Virginia hoping to catch Blackbeard unaware.

Near dusk on the 21st of November the two ships entered Ocracoke Inlet. They spotted Blackbeard's new ship the "Adventure" being prepared for battle. Lt. Maynard waited until daylight to attack. When the battle started Blackbeard fired on Maynard's ships and quickly disabled the "Ranger" by a broadside cannon shot leaving Maynard's ship to fight alone. When Maynard's ship was hit, the Lieutenant instructed his crew to go below for protection hoping Blackbeard would underestimate the crew size. He further instructed his crew to keep their guns and swords ready and in hand. Then Maynard placed two extra ladders into the hole of the ship to allow for faster exit to the deck from below. This made the ship look dead in the water and the crew dead as well.

Blackbeard was fooled by this and led his men onto the boat after telling them the enemy was dead except maybe three or four wounded below. He jumped on board to kill any who remained alive. As his pirates came over the sides of the ship Maynard's crew came up from below and surprised the pirates. Blackbeard and Maynard met face to face. Both fired their pistols. Blackbeard's shot missed but Maynard's hit Blackbeard. However, the shot failed to stop the pirate and one of Maynard's men assisted. Still Blackbeard fought on and only after twenty-five wounds including five pistol shots he fell. Blackbeard met his end at Ocracoke Island near a place still known today as Teach's Hole.

Blackbeard's head was taken and hung over the "Ranger's" bowsprit. Maynard and crew headed to Virginia with their catch to collect the rewards. Blackbeard's death in 1718 helped to bring an end to piracy in North Carolina. Though Blackbeard is one of the most famous pirates, there are many others, including women, equally as feared. Some of these men and women are Jean Lafitte, Captain Kidd, Major Stede Bonnet, Bartholmew Roberts, Anne Bonny, and Mary Read.

Gibson Maynard of White Co. Tennessee

Who was he and who was he related to?

Gibson Maynard
Information on Gibson comes from the Federal Censuses of 1830 and 1850
for White Co., White Co. tax rolls of
1828 and 1829, and a TN Land Grant of 1827. Information on Gibsons
children arises from the Federal
Censuses of 1830/1840/1850/1860 and White Co. tax rolls of 1825/1838.

To summarize, Gibson (Gideon) Maynard was born in Virginia in 1770, was married to Nancy A. b. 1776 VA,
lived in SC in 1800/1806, lived in TN in 1822, did not live in White Co. in 1826, lived in White Co. TN in
1827/1850s and owned land on Alum Lick Branch of Mine Lick Creek. Gibson died in White Co. in the 1850s
when he was in his 80s.He had at least three sons and three daughters; Burell b. 1800 SC, Andrew b. 1805 SC, Moses b. 1806 SC, Lavina E. (Rigsby) b. 1822 TN and two other daughters born 1816/1820.

The things not known about Gibson Maynard are extensive. Gibson has not been found in the Federal Censuses
of 1790, 1800, 1810 or 1820. No property owned in SC has been found. No probate records or estate settlements
in TN have surfaced. Direct evidence of his whereabouts over a 30 year period prior to 1827 has not been found.

In an effort to find Gibson Maynard of White Co.s ancestors, attempts have been made to find a connection to
Gibson Maynard Sr. of Wilkes Co. NC. However, extensive research shows that Gibson Maynard Sr.s son
Gibson died in Adams Co. Illinois in 1842 and therefore cannot be Gibson of White Co. TN.
William Maynard Sr.
Willaim Maynard Sr. b. 1741/1750 came to White Co. by 1811 where he was
on the tax list. William Maynard
Sr. was head of household in the 1820 Census in Jackson Co. and the
1830 Census in White Co. In the 1840
Census in DeKalb Co., he was living with his son John. William Maynard
Sr. owned land on Mine Lick Creek
as did his son John H. Maynard. William Maynard Sr. deeded land to
John Maynard in 1843 (40 acres) and
1844 (38 acres). The Censuses, 1826 Inhabitants List and tax lists
indicate his sons included William Maynard
Jr. and James Maynard in addition to his youngest son John Maynard b.
1795 NC.

William Maynard Sr. Father of Gibson Maynard?
Consider that William Maynard Sr. of White Co. was the father of Gibson
Maynard of White Co. Arguments for this relationship are;
1. Gibson came to White Co. in a distinct later move than William
Maynard Sr. Gibson came to Tennessee by 1822 and to White Co. by 1827 which means he arrived about 11 to 16
years after William Sr. Why after living in SC for many years would Gibson select White Co. TN
for his new home?
It could have been for economic opportunity or to unite with family.
2. In selecting a place in White Co., Gibson choose to live within a mile of William Maynard Sr. and his sons.
Gibson bought property on Alum Lick Branch of Mine Lick Creek just east of William Maynard Sr.s land
on Mine Lick Creek.
Why in all of White Co. would Gibson choose to live as close as possible to William Maynard Sr.?
This is indicative of a close family relationship.
3. William Maynard Sr. was 30 years older than Gibson Maynard per 1830
Census.
They were of different generations.
4. Andrew Maynard, son of Gibson, along with John Maynard were witnesses on the 1827 White Co. deed of
William Maynard. (Deed Book G page 693 property on Dry Branch of Main Lick Creek.)
Why would William select young Andrew Maynard age 22 as a witness along with his own son John age
32?
A logical explanation is that Andrew was Williams grandson via son Gibson.
Wilkes County NC Connection
Indications are that William Maynard Sr. lived in Wilkes Co. NC prior to White Co. TN.
There are records in Surry Co. NC in 1774 and in Wilkes Co. in 1777 through 1805 showing a William Maynard
on tax lists, the 1800 Census and 1805 sale of 100 acres. There are no Wilkes Co. records of William after 1805.
The William Maynard of Wilkes Co. has not been found in any other state except Tennessee. In addition,
William Maynard Jr. was a chain carrier for William Maynard in 1793 in Wilkes Co. NC for Land Entry #156.
John Maynard of White/DeKalb Co. TN gave his birth state as NC in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses..
Also in Wilkes Co. in the 1782-1795 time period was James Maynard b. 1750. James died in Wayne County,
West Virginia on 13 Oct. 1852 at 102 years of age. James stated in his Revolutionary War pension application
that he was born in Virginia. Gibsons declaration that he was born in Virginia in 1770 is compatible with a
Maynard family grouping in Wilkes Co. North Carolina having originated in Virginia.
Future Research
Continued research into the property of William Maynard Sr. and his sons may provide additional insight into
family relationships. From White Co. tax records, William Maynard was taxed for 241 acres in 1834 & 1835 but
only 66 in 1836. Where did that property go? By 1837, the tax was for 266 acres. Where did that property go?
From White Co. tax rolls, it is known that Andrew Maynard owed property tax on 25 acres for 1837. James
Maynard owed taxes on 100 acres for 1836 and 1837. These deeds have not been obtained. After this, DeKalb
Co. was the cognizant authority rather than White Co. Do the deeds of Andrew and James reveal anything about
William Sr.? Do the DeKalb Co. tax rolls prior to Williams death in the 1840s reveal which family members
received Williams property?

CLUES FOR RESEARCH
1-Telephone call with Clellie Ballard....8-26-99 said that Viola Maynard Baughman, Brush, Co. (in rest home) had some research done by Mr..Black (former researcher at SL-Family History Library) He said all the Maynards came from Wake County, N.C. Clue to follow up on. Clellie said that they can be listed as being born in S.C. and the next census it states N.C....the boundry lines changed but they hadn't moved.
(Rebuttal: All the Maynards don't come from Wake Co.,NC)

2-Letter dated June 8, 1994 from Sandy Garrison said "Had brothers James C. Maynard who married in Jefferson County 1866 moved to Mo by 1879. Brother Moses B. ca 1806 N.C...still don't know who father was."
(note: Could research the brother..James C. Maynard in Mo and see if tracking his ancestry will help me).

3-Family records of Tim Williams (now deceased,a cousin & grandson of Andrew Maynard), Cookeville, Tenn.....collected by Dorsa Garrison Law (my mother)....many years ago:
"Andrew Maynard and his brother Mosie (Moses?) Maynard was captured by Indians in middle Tennessee, near Hillham, Tenn. (Overton County). He died 1879, the year the Braggil brothers were hung."
(My note: Pictorial History of Putnam County, Tennessee P. 81 stated "The only public execution ever held in Putnam County was the hanging of the Brassell brothers on March 27, 1878." Note: So this information is not far off from what Tim Williams stated..

Quote from Tim Williams......
"There was 26 wagons of relatives that came from Jamestown, Va to Knoxville and fought the Indians (as records)."
Tim Williams, Cookeville, Tenn...This information collected by Dorsa Garrison Law said:
" ANDREW MAYNARD was Tim Williams grandfather.
Note: 2000 A genealogy teacher said to check: Early Militia Records in Augusta Co.,Va....it was a staging area for Indian fighters....teacher's name ? in Lone Mt. Stake, Las Vegas,NV....?
   tel: 360-5202...

4-Dorsa Garrison Law papers:
Said Ammon Maynard, was 1st cousin of Ezekiel. If this is correct, that is a huge clue.
*****AMMON MAYNARD was Harriet Bradford Bullington's 1st husband. ( There is another Ammon Maynard in the area)....She later married Ezekiel. AMMON'S father was WILLLIAM. It would seem that WILLIAM & ANDREW would be brothers if this is the correct Ammon Maynard.

3-12-2000 I picked a name in white pages looking for Emilie Maynard in Sparta, Tenn.. There was no Emilie so I just picked out a name: Bill Maynard and called hoping that he could tell me if there was an Emilie in the area. It turns out to be his wife is Emilie.........what luck She was coming back in 30 min. so I'll call back. I spoke with her and she does not yet have the information I'm looking for....still trying to figure the Maynards out. She is a Maynard and so is her husband. She tells me that there are still Maynards in Van Buren Co.,Tenn).

Emilie Maynard, Rt.9 Box 87, Sparta, Tennessee---zip? 583...Jan 23, 1992 letter in file.
"The first mention I can find of Andrew in White County was in 1826 where he is listed in the "Free Men over 21 Census". He is listed with Burrel Maynard in Capt. Parkers' Company (this is now in Van Buren County) Burrel was a son of Drury that came from Wilkes County, North Carolina. Drury had two sons and one daughter. Drury died CA 1824-5 and Burrel got his land. Andrew apparently left this area before 1830 or anyway there is no mention of him in the census in any middle Tennessee.
(My Note: He was in the 1850 Census of DeKalb County with name spelled Mainard...she may have missed that spelling..) (1860 Cumberland Co,Tenn..This Drury Mainard may be Andrew Maynard, may not be....).
Possibly he was living with another family. I have often wondered if Andrew was a son of DRURY and went to DeKalb County to live among his cousins.
(Gibson Jr's Descendants). No mention of Andrew again until the 1840 DeKalb County Tenn. Census in the Falling Water District. There are several Maynard men in this district that I have never been able to find out who they belong to...Samuel and Mikager, both fairly young. They don't appear in 1850 anywhere in Tenn. On the DeKalb Co Tax 1857-1858 Mikager appears and also a Webster Maynard, neither own land...They only paid their poll tax. Mikager lived next to Moses Maynard."
"I also have an Andrew J. Maynard listed as serving in the Civil War as a Corporal in I Company, 5TH Calvary (Yankee Army). Also, there is an Andrew in the same company that served as a Private...This may be the same person who was promoted or maybe not. Other Maynards in the same company were Hickman, James C., Mekajah and Waymon W. These last two were sons of Andrew. I would very much like to know what ever happened to Andrew's son, Anderson, who was born ca 1831. It seems as if most of the family disappeared after the war. I don't know if Andrew and Elizabeth died before 1870 or if they left Tennessee.
Thousands of people left Tenn after the war. My great, great grandfather, Larkin Maynard, died during the war and his wife died about a year later. Their seven were scattered all over the countryside and we are still trying to put them together. "
