Dear Denzil,
I do not recall answering your question regarding who Samuel's father may be. I suspect it is MOSES GARRISON.....

   Dear Eleanor:

> That line is new to me. I have always thought that the Rockingham County Garrisons were connected to my line of ISAAC GARRISON. I do not, however, have proof of that. Who was the father of SAMUEL GARRISON, b. 1775/1770?
That should be the main question. Do you know, or suspect, who his father was?

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE:

Kime, MO. & the Papers of H. Y. MABREY by Cletis R. Ellinghouse. Editor, Puxico Press
(two pictures included with article, one of John W. Garrison and son Stanley Garrison,
and one group setting taken about 1939.)

Family fled native France because of religious persecution Garrison surname was long identified with Kime

35th in the series.

Probably no other surname was so closely identified for so long with Kime as Garrison, the family that provided the first and last postmasters, David L. (Lemmy) Garrison (1870-1912) and John W. Garrison (1913-1993). They were third cousins.

The pioneer in Wayne County, Azariah Garrison (1788-1860s), was a native of North Carolina who arrived in the 1850s from Humphreys County, Tenn., with his second wife, Rebecca (Phanatti) Garrison, and their family.

Azariah Garrisons son John F. Garrison (1850-1912) was the father of John F. Ed Garrison (1885-1974) and grandfather of John W. Garrison.

According to family sources, Azariah Garrison was a son of Moses Garrison (1737-1820s), a native of Virginia who spent several years in North Carolina before moving to Smith County, Tenn., where he died. Moses Garrison was one of 31 charter members of the Old Salem Baptist Church organized there in 1809.

The ancestors of Moses Garrison were French Huguenots who fled homes in their native land to escape religious persecution. They came in America from England long before the Revolutionary War.

*

Upon his arrival in Wayne County, Azariah Garrison made his home across the St. Francis River form the site of Kime on land originally awarded to James Caldwell by the Spanish government.

His wife died before the outbreak of the Civil Was and he died during the war. They are buried at the very old Garrison Cemetery, which occasionally is under the waters of Lake Wappapello and is not far from where they lived.

Another of the graves is that of their eldest son William Levi Garrison (1832-1884), one of many in the area who served in Company H, 31st Infantry, during the Civil War.

Levi Garrison and his wife, Mariah (Hamilton) Garrison, lived and farmed on the west side of the river but later owned a property south of Kime near the river on the east side, according to land records.

The property of Levi Garrisons son, William A. Bill Garrison (1868-1956), and his wife, Rosetta (Meloy) Garrison (1876-1938), was on the east side of Holladay Bridge and may have been his fathers place.

One of the sources for information in this article, Sherrie Plummer of Centralia, Mo., is a great-great granddaughter of Rebecca (Garrison) Birmingham, the wife of James Birmingham and a daughter of William Levi Garrison.

Another stone at the old cemetery marks the grave of Mary Ann (Garrison) Jones (1866-1931), the daughter of Levi Garrison and the second wife of Oak Grove Baptist Church member William T. Jones (1851-1936) whose father, John Jones, lived nearby.

John F. Garrison and his wife, Mary E. (Atnip) (Rainwater) Garrison (1852-1892), are also buried in the old cemetery that is not far from the site of the log home they occupied.

The adjoining farms of their sons, John Edward Ed Garrison, George Azariah Garrison (1887-1941) and school teacher Henry Archie Garrison (1890-1958), were north of Holliday Landing.

*

The wives of George Garrison and Archie Garrison were sister, respectively Maggie Seabaugh and Virgie Seabaugh, daughters of Andrew J. Seabaugh and Martha (Deaton) Seabaugh, a pioneer Kime family with extensive land holdings.

Hattie Garrison, an older sister who never married, raised her three younger brothers after their mothers early death.

Another sister, Charlotte Isabella (Garrison) Estes (1876-1907), was the first wife of Benjamin F. Estes (1870-1961), who was widely known as a sawmill operator in the neighborhood. He was a son of Union Army soldier John F. Estes.

Willard A. Garrison (1911-1996), a son of Archie Garrison, was widely known. He was superintendent of schools at Neelyville, Williamsville and Annapolis and later director of education at Sears youth Center in Poplar Bluff. He was chairman of the Poplar Bluff School board in the 1950s. A sister, Gladys (Garrison) Page, the widow of Floyd Shorty Page, lives in Poplar Bluff.

Mabel (Garrison) Smith, the wife of Tom Smith, and Lois (Garrison) Strickland, the wife of Russell Strickland, were George A. Garrisons children.

*

Wayne B. Garrison of Poplar Bluff, the younger son of Ed Garrison and Mollie (Jackson) Garrison (1894-1988), says he, his brother and sister, Hazel (Garrison) (Penrod) Woods, attended New liberty School that Claude Libla and his wife taught for a number of years. Raymond Holladay, Lyman Aldrich and Jim Page were among the neighbors he recalled. Mr. Garrison for a time lived in the home of his brother at Kime and attended Oak Grove School. Miss Helen Rhodes, a daughter of Ira L. Rhodes, was his teacher.

The move across the river to Kime came about after John w. Garrison and his father, who served on the board of Wayne County Bank at Greenville, acquired the properties of the deceased David Cozort. John W. Garrison and his family lived in the Cozort home behind the store while he was the postmaster and store owner at Kime.

After the Kime post office was closed and razed, John W. Garrison moved to the Paterson area and shortly thereafter carried the mail from Greenville to Kime and Shook. When he vacated the Cozort home Simon P. Noldge (1878-1958) and Margaret (White) Noldge (1881-1965), the parents of his wife, Gladys, moved in.

The Garrisons son, Stanley Stan Garrison, says his grandparents moved to the Cozort home from the mill house, which was across the road from the store. It was a two-story building that once housed the Cozort Flour Mill. Over the years, several rented it from the Garrisons and made it their home.

With the post office gone, several mail boxes were erected in a row along the road not far from the Noldge home. Families gathered in the Noldge living room to visit while they waited for the mail carrier to arrive, much like they earlier had done in the store building. Bazzell, Seabaugh, Ruess and Crutchfield families were among those Mr. Garrison recalled.

He said his grandparents lived in the Cozort home until the big flood of 1945 forced them out. Water was knee deep and their furniture elevated on blocks to keep it dry when they called it quits. Mr. Noldge, a black-..

John w. Garrison several years later became the Wayne County treasurer and held that post for many years. After the death of Gladys (Noldge) Garrison, (1917-1976), he was married to Dorothy Whelan (1926-1996).

Notes for SAMUEL GARRISON, SR.:

Samuel, son of Moses, was married twice and the order of marriages, children are not certain. It is believed he had two sets of children by the two wives, but again, not sure. The five children listed with wife Lucinda may not all have been by her and the combination is uncertain.

According to Mr. Dave Zolle , "Moses, the father of Samuel and Ephraim, owned land in Rockingham Co., NC at the time of both of their births," hence, their birthplaces were Rockingham, NC. Further he says "they both were in Smith Co., TN by 1810 and stayed there until after 1834. Samuel left and was on the 1840 Census of Jefferson Co., IL. He then went to Obion Co., TN where he died....Samuel received a land grant so he must have been in the Revolutionary War or War of 1812."

Samuel was between 70 and 80 years of age

10-15 yr. old males= 2

5-10 yr. old females= 3

20-30 yr. old females= 1

50-60 yr. old females= 1

Information from the Issac Garrison Family Association, 1732-1836 (Published book in FHL/SLC), furnished to me by Linda McMillen (mcmillen@fastlane.net) on 5/30/97:

"Samuel Garrison was born 1765/70, died 1846 Obion Co., TN; married first by 1790 believe to have been married to a Loftis; children 3 sons and 1 daughter. Married second to Lucinda Bethell by 1800. She was born 1786 NC,
[they had] 2 sons, 2 daughters. Samuel was in Rockingham Co., NC by 1789 when he signed as a witness on a deed. He left Rockingham Co., NC and went to Smith Co., TN with his father and brothers before 1809 and remained there until after the 1830 Census but was in Saline Co., ILL by September 12, 1832 when he bought land in that county, which he sold on July 15, 1836 with wife Lucinda signing the deed, and located in Obion Co., TN where his son John H. Garrison (my great-great grandfather) deeded 150 acres of land to him. We have definite records on five [of Samuel] Garrison children: James, John H., Moses Franklin, Mary, and Susannah."

Samuel Garrison Sr., an older brother to Azariah Garrison, moved from Rockingham County, N.C., to Smith County, Tenn., before 1809. He later lived in Saline County, Ill., and till later in Obion County, Tenn where he died."

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: Dated:
Kime, MO. & the Papers of H. Y. MABREY by Cletis R. Ellinghouse. Editor, Puxico Press
Note: Kime is in Wayne Co.,MO

(two pictures included with article, one of John W. Garrison and son Stanley Garrison, and one group setting taken about 1939.)

Family fled native France because of religious persecution

Garrison surname was long identified with Kime,Mo

35th in the series.

Probably no other surname was so closely identified for so long with Kime as Garrison, the family that provided the first and last postmasters, David L.(Lemmy) Garrison (1870-1912) and John W.

(note..this church is in Liberty,Dekalb,Tenn...ELJ)

The ancestors of Moses Garrison were French Huguenots who fled homes in their native land to escape religious persecution. They came in America from England long before the Revolutionary War.

                                         *

Upon his arrival in Wayne County, Azariah Garrison made his home across the St. Francis River form the site of Kime on land originally awarded to
James Caldwell by the Spanish government.

His wife died before the outbreak of the Civil Was and he died during the war. They are buried at the very old Garrison Cemetery, which
occasionally is under the waters of Lake Wappapello and is not far from where they lived.

Another of the graves is that of their eldest son William Levi Garrison (1832-1884), one of many in the area who served in Company H, 31st
Infantry, during the Civil War.

Levi Garrison and his wife, Mariah (Hamilton) Garrison, lived and farmed on the west side of the river but later owned a property south of Kime
near the river on the east side, according to land records.

The property of Levi Garrisons son, William A. Bill Garrison (1868-1956), and his wife, Rosetta (Meloy) Garrison (1876-1938), was on the
east side of Holladay Bridge and may have been his fathers place.

One of the sources for information in this article, Sherrie Plummer of Centralia, Mo., is a great-great granddaughter of Rebecca (Garrison)
Birmingham, the wife of James Birmingham and a daughter of William Levi Garrison.

Another stone at the old cemetery marks the grave of Mary Ann (Garrison) Jones (1866-1931), the daughter of Levi Garrison and the second wife
of Oak Grove Baptist Church member William T. Jones (1851-1936) whose father, John Jones, lived nearby.

John F. Garrison and his wife, Mary E. (Atnip) (Rainwater) Garrison (1852-1892), are also buried in the old cemetery that is not far from the site
of the log home they occupied.

The adjoining farms of their sons, John Edward Ed Garrison, George Azariah Garrison (1887-1941) and school teacher Henry Archie
Garrison (1890-1958), were north of Holliday Landing.

Estes (1870-1961), who was widely known as
a sawmill operator in the neighborhood. He was a son of Union Army soldier John F. Estes.

Willard A. Garrison (1911-1996), a son of Archie Garrison, was widely known. He was superintendent of schools at Neelyville, Williamsville
and Annapolis and later director of education at Sears youth Center in Poplar Bluff. He was chairman of the Poplar Bluff School board in the 1950s. A
sister, Gladys (Garrison) Page, the widow of Floyd Shorty Page, lives in Poplar Bluff.

Mabel (Garrison) Smith, the wife of Tom Smith, and Lois (Garrison) Strickland, the wife of Russell Strickland, were George A. Garrisons
children.

                                         *

Wayne B. Garrison of Poplar Bluff, the younger son of Ed Garrison and Mollie (Jackson) Garrison (1894-1988), says he, his brother and sister,
Hazel (Garrison) (Penrod) Woods, attended New liberty School that Claude Libla and his wife taught for a number of years. Raymond Holladay, Lyman
Aldrich and Jim Page were among the neighbors he recalled. Mr. Garrison for a time lived in the home of his brother at Kime and attended Oak Grove
School. Miss Helen Rhodes, a daughter of Ira L. Rhodes, was his teacher.

The move across the river to Kime came about after John w. Garrison and his father, who served on the board of Wayne County Bank at
Greenville, acquired the properties of the deceased David Cozort. John W. Garrison and his family lived in the Cozort home behind the store while he
was the postmaster and store owner at Kime.

After the Kime post office was closed and razed, John W. Garrison moved to the Paterson area and shortly thereafter carried the mail from
Greenville to Kime and Shook. When he vacated the Cozort home Simon P. Noldge (1878-1958) and Margaret (White) Noldge (1881-1965), the parents
of his wife, Gladys, moved in.

The Garrisons son, Stanley Stan Garrison, says his grandparents moved to the Cozort home from the mill house, which was across the
road from the store. It was a two-story building that once housed the Cozort Flour Mill. Over the years, several rented it from the Garrisons and made it
their home.

With the post office gone, several mail boxes were erected in a row along the road not far from the Noldge home. Families gathered in the
Noldge living room to visit while they waited for the mail carrier to arrive, much like they earlier had done in the store building. Bazzell, Seabaugh,
Ruess and Crutchfield families were among those Mr. Garrison recalled.

He said his grandparents lived in the Cozort home until the big flood of 1945 forced them out. Water was knee deep and their furniture elevated
on blocks to keep it dry when they called it quits. Mr. Noldge, a black-..

John w. Garrison several years later became the Wayne County treasurer and held that post for many years. After the death of Gladys (Noldge)
Garrison, (1917-1976), he was married to Dorothy Whelan (1926-1996).

Stan Garrison, a Fredericktown banker, values an old clock he has in his possession that once was a part of his fathers store at Kime. He likely
is Kimes youngest native son, since he was born in the Cozort home in 1938. His son, Darren Garrison, is presently Wayne County circuit clerk.

                                         *

Kimes first postmaster, David L. Lemmy Garrison, was the only child of William Thomas Garrison (1845-1870s), who died not long after
his arrival in Wayne county and his subsequent marriage to Margaret (Epley) Garrison.

Thomas Garrison, a son of Samuel Garrison Jr. (1812-1879) and Roseanna (Cobb) Garrison (1822-) was a grandson of Samuel Garrison Sr.
(1765-1846).

Samuel Garrison Sr., an older brother to Azariah Garrison, moved from Rockingham County, N.C., to Smith county, Tenn., before 1809. He
later lived in Saline County, Ill., and till later in Obion County, Tenn. Where he died.

The family of Samuel Garrison Jr. was living in Obion County, Tenn., in 1850, in which census his wife Roseanna was described as a
Cherokee Indian. The place of his death is not known. She and her family first appeared in the U. S. Census in Wayne County in 1870;

The several Garrison families lived for the next 20 years near on another on the west side of the river not far from where the pioneer settled in the
1850s.

Harold, first, please change my email address to gedavies@winnfield.net

Now, I think much of what I have is from Mr. Zoller, not sure, but think that's where I got it. When I worked my Garrison line, I wasn't too concerned about source information as that was a long time ago and I didn't have sense enough then (not sure I have much now) to worry about sources.

I have Ephraim b. bef. 1787 in Rockingham, NC, d. 1877 in DeKalb Co., TN, m. to Mary Catherine Thomas Haw in Jan. 1809 in Sumner Co., TN, with 8 children.

I show Ephraim as the son of Moses, also with brothers Levi, Samuel, John H., Moses Jr., Nehemiah, David, Ephraim Jr., Azariah, & Elizabeth.

I can't swear to all the Garrison stuff I've collected over the years. My g-grandfather got into some sort of killing or maiming scrape in 1874 or about, hightailed it out of Obion Co., to Christian Co., KY for a spell, then to east TX where all outlaws went around the Sabine Strip. He dropped his Garrison name and took the maiden name of his mother. So I ain't no expert. I have however managed to piece mine together enough to know I should be a Garrison, I guess I am actually.

Gregg

THE GARRISONS OF DEKALB COUNTY, TENNESSEE

Moses Garrison was born 27 Nov 1737 in NW Virginia (Probably Orange County). He removed to Old Rowan County, NC between the years 1765 and 1769. As late as 1797 he purchased land in Rockingham Co., NC and in 1800 was listed in the same county. He then moved into Smith County, TN. (about 1807/09), in that part which would later become DeKalb County. He was one of thirty-one charter members of the Old Salem Baptist Church which was organized in Smith Co. in 1809. Moses would remain in Smith County, dying there sometime after the 1820 census. Moses, Sr. (1737) had a total of ten (10) children, including eight sons: Levi, Samuel, John H., Moses Jr., Nehemiah, David, Ephraim and Azariah. He also had two daughters which remain unidentified. Levi moved into KY. and died there (Simpson County) P1830. Samuel would eventually move into Obion Co., TN where he died in 1846. John H. died P1830 in TN. Moses, Jr. left NC, or possibly Smith Co., TN. and moved into SC and then to Ga. where he died P1860. Nehemiah died in Smith Co., TN. in 1815. David left Smith Co. in 1827 and moved to Jefferson Co., Ill. where he died in 1847. Ephraim went to Jefferson Co., Ill. with his brother David in 1827 but returned to DeKalb Co., TN. after the 1830 census, where his youngest daughter Rachel was born in 1830. Ephraim lived the remainder of his life in DeKalb Co. dying there in 1877. Ephraim had a total of 11 children of which we have identified three. A son, Basel Garrison, born ca. 1813 and died ca 1839. Ephraim would become guardian of Basel's children, Martha, Ephraim A. and John B. They were living with Ephraim in the 1850 census. James Hardeman Garrison, a son, who would later remove to Texas where he died in 1875, and Rachel, who never married and died in DeKalb Co. in 1880. We are desperately seeking a list of the children of Ephraim (1788).
Special Note: Our Ephraim (1788) was not, repeat, was not married to Caty Haw
Azariah Garrison, the youngest born of Moses (1737), would eventually settle in Wayne Co., MO. where he died in 1864/5.
Many other descendants remained in DeKalb Co., TN. (In particularly the Liberty/Alexandria areas). The name Garrison has been represented in Smith County since 1809, and that part which became DeKalb County from its inception in 1837.

Hi Harold,
I come through Moses & Milkey, to Samuel & Miss. Loftis, to Obadiah & Elizabeth "Betsey" Calling West, Andrew Jackson Garrison & Glatha Jane Allison to Robert Mansfield Garrison & Ruth Maynard. Our common ancestor is Moses. Since you ask for suggestions, I think it is nice in your narrative if you would add the wifes if they are known.
I'll do some more searching in census....found Rachel tonight on familysearch.org....1880 Census....Or at least I believe this is her....she's the right age and details of state.

It is good to document everything that we can.....what census records do you need or do you have them all?

Notes for AZARIAH GARRISON:

Historical Wayne County by Wayne County ( Missouri) Historical Society, from Lisa Carol
Douglas, 11-11-1997:

The pioneer of Wayne Co., MO. He was a native of NC who arrived in the 1850s from Humphreys Co., TN with his second wife, Rebecca Phanatti Garrison and their family. Upon his arrival in Wayne Co., he made his home across the St. Francis River from the site of Kime on land originally awarded to James
Caldwell by the Spanish Government. His wife died before the outbreak of the Civil War and he died during the war. They are buried at the very old Garrison Cemetery which is occasionally under the waters of Lake Wappapello and is not far from where they lived.

By 1870, the pioneer Azariah Garrison, a widower, had gone to his reward.

Roseanna Garrison, the widow of Samuel Garrison Jr. and the oldest family member, lived for many years on the west side of the river near the others with the surname.

Numbered households in the U.S. Census of 1870 illustrate how closely associated the families and their kinsmen were:

#118: James H. Haggett, a Union Army soldier, and his wife, Edith (Garrison) Haggett, a daughter of Azariah Garrison.

#120: Thomas Garrison, Roseanna Garrison's son, and his wife, Margaret (Epley) Garrison.

#121: James A. Kite, whose wife Louisa was Roseanna Garrison's daughter.

#122: John Strickland Sr., the granddaddy of the Sticklands at Kime.

#124: The Rev. William R. Stickland, a son, whose wife was Roseanna Garrison's daughter Mahala Tennessee (Garrison) Strickland.

#125: Roseanna Garrison's home.

#126: David Epley, whose daughter Margaret was the wife of Roseanna Garrison's son Thomas Garrison.

#127: William Levi Garrison, a son of Azariah Garrison. His household included his unmarried brothers John F. Garrison and Francis Garrison.

#128: Jason Epley, a son of David Epley and brother-in-law of Thomas Garrison.

#129: Obediah Garrison Sr., Roseanna Garrison's son.

#130: William T. Sutherlin, whose wife was Roseanna Garrison's daughter Jane.

#131: John Jones, whose son William T. Jones' second wife was William Levi Garrison's daughter Mary Ann.

#132: Matthew Talley, the husband of John Jones' daughter Margaret.

Representatives of several of these families were members of Oak Grove Baptist Church along with Rufus Rainwater and his wife, Frances (Garrison) Rainwater, who was another daughter of Roseanna Garrison.

*

By 1880, the neighborhood had changed substantially:

#229: Matthew Talley, a widower.

#230: Levi Garrison and his family.

#233: John M. Garrison, in whose home resided his mother, the widow Roseanna Garrison.

#235: James H. Haggett and his wife, Edith (Garrison) Haggett.

#240: Sarah Garrison, the widow of Obediah Garrison Sr.

#241: John Strickland Sr.

#242: James A. Kite and his family.

#247: John F. Garrison and his family.

#249: Francis Garrison and his wife Sarah.

#250: William T. Jones, a widower.

#256: Samuel C. Kime and his second wife, Margaret (Epley) (Garrison) Kime, and family. The census enumerator had crossed the river to the east side to reach the Kime home. After the death in the 1870's of Thomas Garrison his widow was remarried to Mr. Kime.

*

Based on the location of then homes, representatives of the two Garrison families were certainly closely associated in the first years after establishing themselves in the Kime neighborhood.

But Wayne B. Garrison, a son of J. E. Ed' Garrison (1885-1974), says he remembers only one Garrison not in his own family, William A. Bill' Garrison, Levi Garrison's son who had a club foot. The male descendants of Samuel and Roseanna Garrison disappeared may years ago.

Nevertheless, the link between the families is not entirely dimmed by the passage of time. Louise (Hughes) Douglas of Apple Valley, Calif., a granddaughter of the Rev. W. R. Stickland (1847-1922) and Mahala (Garrison) Strickland (1850-1925), says her mother, Louisa Clementine (Strickland) Hughes, the wife of George Walter Hughes, wrote in an old family paper the brothers Archie Garrison (1890-1958) and George Garrison (1887-1941), sons of John F. Garrison (1850-1912), were her cousins.

Siblings of Louisa Clementine (Strickland) Hughes were Robert Strickland (1871-) whose wife was Dora Wilson, Thomas Stickland (1873-) whose wife was Minnie Dickerson, William Stickland (1874-) whose wife was Alice Hightower, Laura Strickland (1876-) whose husband was Cyrus Meloy, John Stickland (1877-) whose wife was Lulu Nunn, Virginia Jency' Strickland (1880-) whose husband was Floyd Nunn, Levi Stickland (1882-) whose wife was Delia Weston, Samuel Elisha Lish' Strickland (1884-) whose wife was Annie Bratcher, Louisiana Lulu' Strickland (1885) whose husband was a Settle, and Mary Elizabeth Strickland (1888-) who died at age 18. The latter was a twin to Louisa Clementine Hughes.

*

W. R. Strickland, pastor of the Center Ridge Baptist Church early in the century, died on a large farm he owned at Westpoint, Ark. His body was returned to Wayne County for burial at Estes Cemetery, which was not far from where the family lived for many years. Family members recall his daughters at home in Arkansas were required to cook the meals for the hired help needed to run the farm.

His widow Mahala Strickland moved into the old Strickland home west of the river where the family of Laura Meloy, her daughter, cared for her the rest of her life. The latter's husband, Cyrus Meloy (1868-1951), was a brother to William A. Garrison's wife Rosetta. Their siblings were Emma Elvira (Meloy) Bonds (1872-1958) and Otho Meloy (1876-1960). Otho Meloy was the husband of Dora (Whitt) Meloy, Emma Elvira Bounds was the wife of Isom Bounds whose brother P. Green Bounds' wife Sarah Jane (Berry) Bounds, was a sister to George C. Berry (1895-1969). Mr. Berry's wife was Cyrus Meloy's daughter Anne E. (Meloy) Berry (1896-1966).

John Strickland Sr. the patriarch of the family, was one of a number in the family en route to Texas in wagons from Davies County, Ind., who decided to stay in Wayne County after camping at Blue Spring in the late 1860's and seeing how beautiful it was and how good the hunting and fishing were.

His son John Strickland JR's daughter Anna B. (Strickland) Nelson, was the wife of William Nelson.

The Nelson's who lived on Otter Creek between Ojibway and Chaonia, arrived in the 1880's from Tennessee in a wagon train directed by William Jasper Nelson (1827-1896) a Confederate soldier who was captured and incarcerated for two years at Rock Island, Ill. One of those in the wagons, Josephine Josie' (Nelson) Forbes (1871-1944), was later to be widely known as a seer with great powers. Thousands went to her home near Taskee for help. She was the wife of William E. Forbes (1872-1945).

Obediah M. Obey' Garrison Jr. a Center Ridge school teacher and grandson of Roseanna Garrison, was the husband of Jennie E. Lizzie' (Strickland) Garrison. She was a daughter of Elisha Strickland (1852-1915), another son of John Strickland Sr., and a sister to Mary Artie (Strickland) Cozort, the wife of William Iverson Cozort, and Sarah Ann (Strickland) Mabrey, the wife of Charles Y. Mabrey. Brothers were Nathaniel Strickland and Elisha Ray Strickland.

The Kite Cemetery, difficult to reach near the river north of Garrison Cemetery, is where James A. Kite (1842-1916) and Louisa (Garrison) Kite (1857-1918) are buried. A large impressive stone, the only one at the cemetery, marks their graves.

The family of Doc and Mary Garrison at Center Ridge early in this century may have been related to others. He was born in Tennessee in 1852, according to the U.S. Census of 1900, and arrived in Wayne County after 1880. Asa Garrison, Noah Garrison and Vinnie (Garrison) (Clubb) Ethridge (1891-1960) were three of their children.
