His parents were members of the Church when he was born. When he was one year old, his parents moved to Nauvoo, Ill., where he became acquainted with Joseph and Hyrum Smith and had the privilege of hearing these men of God preach, and he often sat upon their knees; and although he was but three years old, when he saw them last, so impressive was their personality upon his mind that he distinctly remembers them to-day, after the elapse of nearly sixty years. He went into the Nauvoo Temple in 1846 with his mother, and remembers vividly what he saw. During the great exodus from Nauvoo in 1846, two of his sisters died. He was baptized May 5, 1849, at Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1850 he received a patriarchal blessing, in which he was promised many glorious things, and he bears testimony that they have all been fulfilled to the very letter. He came to Utah in 1851, and in 1861 he was called on a short mission to go as a teamster to the Missouri river after poor immigrants. At the age of 22 years he married Lucinda L. Goodwin, and later (March 21, 1867), he married Martha Worlton, as a plural wife. He suffered imprisonment for the practice of this principle in 1889, but he says he knows it is a divine principle. He is the father of 20 children, all of whom he is proud of. March 21. 1863, he was ordained an Elder. He was ordained a Seventy Jan. 2, 1868, and on Nov. 10, 1889, he was set apart as a president in the 68th quorum of Seventy. For 24 years he served as a Sabbath school teacher in the Lehi Ward, and has also been otherwise active in Ward affairs. He has done much work for his departed relatives in the Temple, and his greatest desire is to see the Kingdom of [p.508] God spread upon the earth. In civil life he has held several positions in the city government. Goodwin Family A Tribute In 1857 the Goodwins started the journey to Utah where they spent the winter of 185758 in St. George. Early in 1859 they arrived in Lehi where they established a permanent home. It was here that Lucinda met Martin Bushman, a native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and after one year of courtship the young couple were married March 21, 1863 in Salt Lake City by President Brigham Young. By 1864 they were financially able to buy a city lot and build a small home of their own. Ten children, eight girls and two boys were born to them which included two pair of twins. Both sons filled missions, one, Lewis, dying in the mission field. Seven of her children preceded Lucinda in death. She passed away December 6, 1906 at the age of 63 years. Lucinda was a large woman weighing 200 pounds, 5 ft. 9 in. in height with gray eyes and brown hair. She was of a kindly disposition and happiest when performing loving service for her husband and children. She did not participate in public life and left home only to attend to religious duties or to do some kind deed for a neighbor. About 1992, after Grandma Belva Johnson had several falls and was no longer able to stay in her own home, we cleaned out the house and had quite a bit of work completed on the house...a new floor, new walls in many rooms, paint, etc. We cleaned out the house (316 N. 2nd W.....Martin B. Bushman's home that Val & Belva Gurney Johnson had bought in early to mid 1930's and they moved into it latet 30's or early 1940). We worked so hard to make it beautiful again. All the time we were doing that I felt a special spirit in the house as if Martin B. Bushman knew and appreciated us for what we were doing to "his home." I love that old home and I love Martin B. Bushman as I feel like I know him because of his journal. Note: Stephen Johnson and Kim, his wife....lived there as of July 1992. Stephen is the 5th generation to live there.
