12-7-03 Hi Kaye, Hope all is well with you and your family. I'm compiling a book for Cray's birthday on Dec.22nd. It will be a loose leaf...so additional information can be added from time to time. If you have any stories or histories on the family, that you'd like to share, I'd love to put them in his binder. Any information is appreciated. Found Henry Duvall in the 1880 Census? Do you have that already? I can e-mail if you'd like. Love to hear from you. Ellie Johnson Need to research 1880 Census for Webster Co.,Georgia for this family... It's always exciting to share information with someone else researching the same family. I was thinking of the information we shared and for some reason in the back of my mind I think I remember you saying Maggie's birthdate was in April of 1882. I have her birthdate as Feb. 1881 , Source: census records. I discovered that information in Amarillo. I plan on returning to Amarillo in the near future. The public library has much info that is not online. Also my timeline for Eugene and Maggie shows them in Amarillo for a longer period of time than what you quoted me. I researched the actual city directories plus other relatives while in Amarillo. After I finish these Halloween costumes for the granddaughters and their weekend visit I will have time to exchange more information with you. If you would send me what you have, then I can add, correct, or supply documented sources to your information and I won't duplicate what you have. That will save time for both of us. I, too, have also been working on genealogy since I was a young girl. In fact, when I started working on the Estes line, the information I had came from Jerry's and Marilyn's mother, Ida Mae, who died in 1965. At the time I began, online resources were not available and I and Jerry have worn out many pairs of shoes researching physically in many different locations in Texas and Oklahoma. I was at a dead end for quite a long time until online message boards, etc, were available and then the reasearch was easier and more productive. I am still a firm believer that on site research provides many clues missed and sometimes is more accurate than the information online. At the same time, I do like all the leads provided by the internet. Must return to finishing those costumes. Have a great day and I will look forward to receiving your information and next week I will share with you also. Thanks, Kaye

The index to the newspapers did not have an obituary for any Estes. I checked the Texas death index, but no one of that name died in Potter or Randall County around the time you indicated. Here is what I was able to discover about Eugene Estes time in Amarillo from city directories. He first shows up in the 1907 Directory. The only other directory we have before 1907 is the 1903 directory and he is not in that one. But he could have been here before 1907. Eugene Estes is last shown in the 1912 directory. I checked directories up through 1920 but he is not listed, so it looks like he left here after 1912. His occupation is shown to be a carpenter for the railroad. He moves around a lot from one location to another. There seems to be a connection between him and a Herbert B. Estes because they are living together in the same location for a couple of years. At one point they are living in the same dwelling as someone named Frank L. Fisher, who must have been more than another occupant in the dwelling, because the next year the same Fisher and Herbert Estes are together but at a different address than the previous address. In all of the city directory entries there is no mention of Eugene's wife. It wasn't until later that the spouses name was included in the directories. The Texas death index did showed some possibilities. There was a Maggie Estes who died in Bexar County in 1921, a Maggie Adaline who died in El Paso County in 1920, a Maggie T. who died in Dallas County in 1927, a Mrs. E. A. who died in Bowie County in 1921, a Herbert Estes who died in Bexar in 1928, and a Eugene C. Estes who died in Lamb County in 1944. If you like I can make photocopies of the pages from the city directories and the Texas death indexes and send them to you. There would be about 20 pages, which at 15 cents per page would be about three dollars, plus postage in costs. Let me know. Sorry I could not find anything else. You might want to get a copy of the 1920 Texas soundex for Eugene Estes to try to find out where he was living as of the 1920 census. That may give you a lead as to where the family went after leaving Amarillo.
