My note: he wasn't happy with his 2nd marriage and he eventually did leave Tennessee and come back to California about 1955 or 1956 as I recall. Story as told to Eleanor Law Johnson (granddaughter) 20 JUL 1956 in Santa Barbara, CA. "I was born 22 May 1880 in Putnam County, TN to ANDREW JACKSON GARRISON and GLATHA JANE ALLISON. My mother was the second wife of my father and they had six children, four boys and two girls. My father was a captain in the Civil War on the side of the Union Army. He was a tall man, black hair and weighed near 180 lbs. One time when I was about three or four years old, I went out with my dad (followed him) to kill a wild cat. The moon was shinning bright and we saw the wild cat----had eyes big as a fist. My Dad took his rifle (hog rifle) and aimed right between the eyes and that's where he hit him. It came falling through the trees and frightened me so that I ran all the way home and crawled under the bed. I thought the thing was after me. This was in Madison County, AR and my Dad died in the same place. My father had six bullets in him, which were left from the Civil War. And that's what took his life. He was firm captain in command of Stokes Regiment. Will Sewell of Baxter, TN knows about Andrew Jackson Garrison from what his father told him. Will Sewells father was in the regiment as A. J. Garrison. I was too young to remember what my father did for a living. My mother was heavy-set and had red hair, medium height. She was a kind, loving mother. I was just going on four years old when my father died. There was only 11 months difference between the time of death of my parents. (Correction: pension application says there was a difference of 20 months.... her death date: 30 OCT 1886.) My father was taken 9 FEB 1885 of wounds received during Civil War. My mother died about JAN 1886 (actually died 30 OCT 1886) from typhoid fever. After the death of my father in Madison County, AR, we moved down off the mountain (lived in a log house) into the valley near White River (he thought it was in Scott County but was probably still in Madison County). After my mother died, we were all left alone so one of my uncles, GRANT ALLISON, took us all (6 children) to Putnam County, TN. When there we lived with my grandmother and step-grandfather, ELIZABETH PEGGY CLARK ALLISON BUTLER and TAYLOR BUTLER. I went to school at Bethham School at least five years. They didn't have grades then, only reading books were grades...1st reader, 2nd reader, etc. Studied spelling from "Blue-Back Speller". My work consisted of farming around the home. I met my wife, RUTH ANGELINE MAYNARD, at Zion Hill Church in Putnam County, 8th Dist. I went with her for two years and we married when I was about 18 or 19 (actual date: 30 OCT 1898). We got married at my home in Putnam County in October. (* Note: Their marriage license was issued and recorded in DeKalb County so his home may have been in DeKalb County as the line was so close). We rented a home for one year in DeKalb County, TN and then bought a home with 70 acres in DeKalb County (Brimer Hollers). We lived there for 2 or 3 years and sold part of place and moved up to Putnam County. Bought a home there with 20 acres... Dorsa was born there. Lived there about five years. After that moved down Putnam County near DeKalb County line. Lived there 10-12 years or more (14). From there we moved to Baxter, TN. We lived there until 1930 when we came to CA. BIRTH: Personal interview on tape in possession of Eleanor Law Johnson...I have transcribed this record and have in my personal possession........... /////////////// Bible records in possession of Nancy Garrison Winegar's children: Jimmy Winegar or Shirley Winegar Smith, Palo Cedro, California. //////////////. DEATH: Family records...knowledge of her death, personally attended her funeral and grave side in Madera, California. ///////////// HISTORY written by Eleanor L. Johnson: Aunt Maud was my favorite aunt because we always seemed to spend more time with her than any of my mothers other sisters and she was a fabulous cook. No one else cooked like she did unless it was her mother, my grandmother, Ruth Angeline Maynard Garrison. It was such a treat to go to Aunt Maud's home in Madera, California and play with my cousins June, Dorothy and Leon. Howard was away in the service and married by then. We'd go thru Madera on our way to Palo Cedro, California to visit my grandparents, Robert & Ruth Garrison. It was always a favorite stopping off place and I have many happy memories of that time spent with the Garrison side of the family and specifically Aunt Maud Garrison Maxwell and her family. My Mom (Dorsa Mae Garrison) and Aunt Maud were the closest of sisters, soul mates. I think that was because they heard the missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) while they visited in Aunt Francis Maynard and Uncle John Watson's home. They knew their message was true and both joined the church, Maud in Tennessee and mother in Salt Lake City. Aunt Francis was Ruth Angeline Maynard's sister and much loved by Maud and Dorsa. Their home was the gathering place for the Mormon missionaries in that area of Tennessee, so it was natural for Maud and Dorsa to hear the gospel message regarding the restoration of Christ's church by a modern prophet, Joseph Smith.. Maud joined the Mormon Church in Tennessee but later when she married her husband was against her association with the church. She was a peaceful person and followed her husbands council but never lost her belief in the church and Joseph Smith. She encouraged my mother to leave Tennessee so she could follow her convictions regarding the restored church of Jesus Christ. For both of them it took courage to do what they did when the family was opposed to it though they always were kind and hospitable to the Elders and shared their meals with them when they came to visit. They just did not understand what a wonderful spirit there was in the meetings they attended and how their hearts had been touched by the truth. My mother traveled to Salt Lake City after a tearful goodbye to her family in Tennessee. She was baptized in the famed Tabernacle on Temple Square in the basement baptismal font. Her posterity are greatly blessed because of her decision. To this time July 1998 (update July 2004), none of Maud's descendents or any of the other Garrison brothers and sisters have become members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Donnel Bush and his wife took care of Aunt Maud in her later years........used to go and visit her and take care of things she needed. When she was incapable of taking care of her self ......Dorothy and June put her in a Fresno Rest Home and then she was taken to June's to live till she passed away. Don said that they never told him when she died and so he was so disappointed. /////////////////

We were sorry to hear of C's stroke and your return home. Art had shared your interesting letter with us. I am not sure how many relatives have been contacted by Robert & Judy Garrison, or Cheryl Hamilton (Veryle's niece in Michigan.) Art had come to AZ with us the last week in October, we took him to Calif. the following week where he stayed for a couple of weeks and then flew home to Allen Park. He drove back on 12-15 with a friend who returned to MI on 12-19. He seemed to finally have come to terms with the loss of Veryle. On Tuesday A.M. he was polishing his car, getting ready to go to Calif. for Christmas. The neighbor looked out window about 10:30 AM and saw him lying on concrete next to his car, and she immediately called 911, but paramedics were unable to sustain a heart beat. He went to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The funeral will be in Negaunee, Mi, on Saturday, 1-3-98 The nieces will be there, and they said Khrista will also go, but we are not able to go. Also, Ada Ruth (Garrison-Watson)called and said she was negotiating to fly up. Art had his estate all settled, except we could not find a listing of personal items, but I didn't look very hard. I sent briefcase to Cheryl, per instructions from his lawyer. (she talks a little about her genealogy and then concludes) If you have more questions, please write.
