Family records.... Letter from his daughter, dater 12-16-91 stating that he died on December 11th and his funeral was December 16, 1991 (see Vannah Clark file). He died of lung and brain cancer. Letter from Beth Mills, his daugher, dated January 1, 1992 (see Vannah Clark file/ James Carlos Garrison): She sent information on their family, funeral program with date of death being in conflict with what Vannah said in her letter. He married (2) GWENDLYN RUTH WHITESELL Aft. 1954. She was born 1927, and died 08 Feb 1997. Notes for JAMES CARLOS GARRISON: LIFE STORY - JAMES CARLOS GARRISON (by Beth Mills) James Carlos Garrison was born to John Jackson Garrison and Lee Maxwell Garrison, August 30, 1924, in Putnam County, Baxter, TN. He was the first of four boys. As a child growing up in TN he helped tend the family plant nursery, tobacco fields and the large garden at home. There was always livestock to care for; horses, mules, chickens, pigs, and goats and cows to milk. Carlos' mother was a devout Christian lady who started her day praising the Lord with songs and prayer. Each of her children were dedicated to the Lord at an early age. Carlos remembered well his childhood days and his spiritual teaching. At age 13 he gave his life to the Lord and was baptized in the Coney (K-Nee) Fork River (note by Eleanor L. Johnson..probably the Caney Fork River) which was close by. He would laugh and say; "I met the Lord bare foot and wearing bib overalls". His church membership was established with the First Church of Christ in Baxter. As a teen he played football and attended Baxter Seminary. Carlos and brother Kenneth came to Sublette by bus with a letter invitation from their Uncle Bob Garrison. "Come to Kansas, the fields are ripe for harvest and there is work here." Carlos worked that first summer for room and board and a little spending money. The fields were big, the sun was hot and the days long. Carlos fell in love with the wide-open space of Western Kansas and settled here in Sublette in 1945. He worked for Harold Lower for several years and was a cowboy for Jarbo Cattle ompany for 8 years before going to work for Cities Service Gas/Williams Brothers Petroleum Company. He was a truck driver, pipeline repairman, and substituted as foreman when needed. He enjoyed his work and made it a 30-year career, retiring in 1984 due to ill health. Carlos enjoyed his retirement. Each morning he would walk to the Sublette Drug store for a cup of coffee and visiting with friends. From there he would walk to J.R.'s Gallery to visit with daughter Beth, then on to the Post Office for the daily "junk". He usually walked back to McCalmont's Grocery store for some "bologne and milk", arriving home close to lunchtime. Many afternoons he would stop at Harry Toles' Barbershop for fellowship with men of the community and an occasional "ear lowering". Many times when asking Carlos what he was doing, he would reply, "I'm busy, at doing nothing". Carlos enjoyed tending to his yard, keeping things "neat as a pin", and growing roses. Such a delicate bloom being tendered with the gentlest of touches. He was a gentle man with a kind heart and good listening ear and very slow to tell you what his thoughts were. Carlos didn't have any hobbies; his working was his leisure. Good hard work satisfied him and he was one of those men who could do an honest days work and never get dirty. He always liked looking neat and had an eye for fancy belt buckles, cowboy hats and tailored western suits. Driving "long" cars was a necessity in his life. He wanted a smooth ride with plenty of headroom for his cowboy hat and lots of leg room for stretching out. Comfort was a must. Riding in a car was something he had experienced only a few times before coming to Kansas. One of his greatest joys was little children. His and other peoples too. He had a gentle voice and made the little ones feel special. They were important to him. His children remember him always giving them money for a coke or candy bar and he carried this tradition on with his grandchildren. A special treat was drinking Coca-Cola with peanuts dropped in it. Carlos loved animals, nature and gardening. He enjoyed helping prepare fresh garden vegetables for freezer and canning. Homegrown tomatoes were his favorite. He could hardly wait each year for the first tomato picking from Dale's garden, his son-in-law. Each year he and his wife would go to the eastern slopes of Colorado to bring back fresh peaches. Returning home he would stop around Rocky Ford, Colorado and finish filling the trunk with cantaloupe and watermelons, to share with everyone. A sweet tasting watermelon delighted him and reminded him of home. Carlos left us December 12, 1991, at age 67, to begin his eternal life with Jesus. He was preceded in death by his parents and two younger brothers, Jack and Paul. His brother, Kenneth and wife Carol live in Hugo, Colorado. He is survived by Ruth, his wife of 30 years; one son, Roy William (Bill) Garrison, Sublette; a stepson, John Emberton Jr. and wife Leslie, Trenton, Missouri; four daughter, Vanna Clark, Sitka, Alaska; Jackie Roberts, Leoti, Ruth Trahan and husband Kim, Great Bend; and Beth Mills and Husband Dale, Sublette. Grandchildren are: Michael Shane, Tracy, Brian, Kyle, Jesse, Sam, Peggy, Lee and Jeri: and six reat-grand children: Whitney, Keon, Kayle, Allen, Travis and Carrie; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. He will be remembered by all in very special ways and his children had their own special thoughts. Vanna: Dad worked hard all the time. He was my inspiration to enjoy working hard. If Dad could do it, so could I. Jackie: My sense of humor came from Dad and he was my quiet strength. Ruth: He was my Prince and I greatly admired him. Beth: He was my friend and buddy, and he believed in me. Bill: He was a man of few words with deep compassion. He was my Dad and I loved him. June: J.C., was a gentle man from Tennessee. Funeral services were held on Monday, December 16, 1991, at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Church, Sublette, Kansas with Pastor David Erwin officiating and burial was held in the Copeland Cemetery, Copeland, Kansas. A memorial has been established for the Satanta District Hospital and may be left at the funeral home. Haskel County Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
