This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Charlie Weaver cwgen@OLS.net ==================================================================== [Transcribed by Charlie Weaver, Winston-Salem, NC, from Microfilm, Call # ZNOD95, at Wake Forest University] The early issues of the Hillsborough RECORDER newpaper carried lists, on a space available basis evidently, of addressees of letters being held in the Hillsborough postoffice. Typically these lists were published about every two weeks, with an "as of" date, and names were repeated two or three times. These lists do not necessarily prove that a certain individual was actually living in Orange County, only that someone thought they were. However, the lists do give credible circumstantial evidence that an individual lived in, or passed through, the area served by the Hillsborough PO. This also does not mean that the person had left the area, but perhaps had not been to town lately. Volumes/numbers skipped mean that a list was identical to a previous list or that issue of the paper was missing. Slight differences in consecutive lists will be indicated with notations. This and subsequent lists will list names exactly as shown in the original, with occasional "guesses" at hard to read names or parts of names indicated in [-]. Names spelled as in original, surname caps added. To save space, original columned format changed to line format with alphabetical separation. Number after surname probably indicates number of pieces being held, not two/three people with same name. LIST #1 as of 31 March 1820, Vol. I, No. 9, Published 5 Apr 1820 John ALLISON, James ALISON, Letter to family 7-25-00 Written by Eleanor Law Johnson to Robert and other children: Hi Rob & family, It is interesting to read about Cornwallis in as much as he and his troops ransacked our ancestors house in Hillsboro,NC and took a wagon and team of horses,etc)...I found the following by going to askjeeves.com and putting in Cornwallis name...or Cornwallis in N.C....anyway, it substantiates what our ancestor (my 4th great, grandfather) said about him being in Hillsboro, NC area where our John Allison lived. "Nathanael Greene soon reunited the American army and began a strategic retreat across North Carolina. Almost frantic to get his light troops back, the Earl piled up all superfluous supplies--such as tents, extra blankets, and rum--and burned them so that his own army could travel faster in pursuit. Thus began the "race to the Dan" (i.e., the Dan River, which marked the border between North Carolina and Virginia), an exciting chase undertaken in the near-steady rains of February, through innumerable flooded creeks and rivers under conditions as miserable for the British as they were for the Americans. Cornwallis has been criticized for burning his supply wagons, because he sacrificed everything that makes a soldier's life bearable and ultimately gained nothing by it. But he almost caught his prey; at times the American rear guard and the British vanguard were less than a mile apart. If he had succeeded in crushing Greene's army, the judgment of history would doubtless be much kinder to the Earl. But the desperate gamble failed. Still seeking a decisive battle, Cornwallis retreated to Hillsboro,North Carolina and rested his exhausted troops. (Note: this is where our ancestor,John Allison,Sr. my 5th great, grandfather, lived and Cornwallis & the British troops took Allison's furniture, wagon, team of horses and corn...story below) A few weeks after making his escape, Nathanael Greene felt his own army sufficiently strong to meet Cornwallis in a pitched battle, so he crossed the border again and established a position at Guilford Court House, about 25 miles west of Hillsboro. Obligingly Cornwallis marched to meet him. The resulting Battle of Guilford Court House is considered by some to be the hardest-fought of the entire war; "I never saw such fighting," Cornwallis later declared, "since God made me." The Earl displayed his courage and tenacity as a combat commander (at one point, he ordered the artillery to shell the lines his own men were fighting in) but also his deficiencies as a strategist. Though he won the battle, the victory gave him no advantage. After lingering in the area for several days, he marched his army to the North Carolina coast and spent the month of April in Wilmington. Interesting huh...He later surrended at Yorktown,Virginia...near Jamestown and Williamsburg. Some of you kids were with me in Virginia when we went back to see Karim's wedding....remember we visited that Yorktown area and looked over the vast fields where the fighting went on. Some of us here obtained leave to return home for the purpose of intertaining the situation of our relatives, many of whom had suffered from the depredations of the British under the command of Lord Cornwallis....who with his army had lain in the neighborhood of this declarants fathers for two days and nights.
