Johnson 12/1999 Regarding the history of Grandpa & Grandma Garrison. Ruth Angeline Maynard's father was Ezekiel Maynard and his father was, Andrew Maynard of South Carolina. On the Maynard lines, there is little past that point as it is a difficult research problem. On the Garrison line: Robert Mansfield Garrison's parents were Andrew Jackson Garrison and Glatha Jane Allison. He was a Captain in the Civil War with the Union Army. There are over 200 pages of records on him in the National Archives. He was wounded during the war and applied for a pension. He died in 1885 in Arkansas and then his wife, Glatha Jane, applied for a pension. She died in 1886 and all six children were left orphans and taken back to Tennessee and raised by their grandmother, Elizabeth Peggy Clark Allison. The Garrison line has been another difficult research problem but have had some success working on it. It now goes back to France in the 1500's. Found that Obadiah Garrison and Elizabeth Calling West were in the census records. From one document in A.J.Garrison's penions and military file, it opened up the case. A William Brattan stated that 2 of his brothers married 2 of Andrew's sisters. So, to make a long story short, when tracing one of the sisters death records it stated that Obadiah and Elizabeth were her parents...thus Andrew's parents also. A deed that I found in Court House in DeKalb County..Obadiah stated that "this property was given to me by my father, Samuel Garrison." That one statement tied us into a book on Isaac Garrison Family and it runs back to France. This is just some of the information...Hopefully the old letters and pictures , and research can all be gathered into a little publication and shared with the family. Garrison (great-granddaughter) Andrew was one of several children belonging to Obadiah M. GARRISON (25 JUL 1794, NC - 20 AUG 1862, TN) and Elizabeth 'Betsy' Calling WEST (12 JUN 1792, MD - 5 JUN 1866, TN). He was born in Smith County, TN, 30 AUG 1830. Other than a case of worms treated by John A. Fuson, MD (his father's family physician) Andrew enjoyed a healthy childhood. He married his first bride, Narcissa PRIDY, at the old Salem Baptist Church in Dekalb County, TN, 8 NOV 1848. They had at least four children all born in Dekalb County: 1. Sarah Elizabeth, b. ca 1849 m. 26 DEC 1867, Jasper Kunnells or Reynolds. 2. Matilda Jane, b. ca 1851 d. by 1855 3. Martha Samantha 'Mattie', b. ca 1854, m. 5 SEP 1872, James W. Mason. 4. Andrew Jackson Jr., b. 15 MAR 1863 d. 24 JUL 1934, m. 9 SEP 1888, Alice E. Dean. (They had 14 children.) Andrew received a pistol shot in the side during a quarrel with three rebels who were home on furlough in Liberty, TN. They jumped him because he was a union man. His friend, Monroe Adkins, accidentally shot him while attempting to shoot the rebel Andrew was fighting. Later during the war Monroe is said to have been killed by Andrew. 30 July 1862, at the age of 31, Andrew joined the Union Army. He volunteered with the First Regiment of Middle Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry. In the Battle of Stones he received a slight pistol wound to the left shoulder. January 1863, he was promoted to Sargent with Company A. In January 1863, under the command of General Stanley, the company was on a scouting expedition in pursuit of General Forrest and at the same time attempting to reinforce the troops at Fort Donelson. While crossing Big Harpers River, about 75 miles west of Nashville, Andrew's horse fell and caught him under it. It was an extremely cold day and he remained in that condition until Corp'l William R. Bratten, Duty Sargent Levi Woodside (who ate and bunked with Andrew), Captain Joseph H. Blackburn, and other soldiers pulled the horse off of him and carried him to the bank. He was badly injured (right hip, knee, and back) and wet. Because they were in enemy country Andrew was put back on his horse and th

Story as told to Eleanor Law Johnson (granddaughter) 20 JUL 1956 in Santa Barbara, CA. "I was born 22 May 1880 in Putnam County, TN to ANDREW JACKSON GARRISON and GLATHA JANE ALLISON. My mother was the second wife of my father and they had six children, four boys and two girls. My father was a captain in the Civil War on the side of the Union Army. He was a tall man, black hair and weighed near 180 lbs. One time when I was about three or four years old, I went out with my dad (followed him) to kill a wild cat. The moon was shinning bright and we saw the wild cat----had eyes big as a fist. My Dad took his rifle (hog rifle) and aimed right between the eyes and that's where he hit him. It came falling through the trees and frightened me so that I ran all the way home and crawled under the bed. I thought the thing was after me. This was in Madison County, AR and my Dad died in the same place. My father had six bullets in him, which were left from the Civil War. And that's what took his life. He was firm captain in command of Stokes Regiment. Will Sewell of Baxter, TN knows about Andrew Jackson Garrison from what his father told him. Will Sewells father was in the regiment as A. J. Garrison. I was too young to remember what my father did for a living. My mother was heavy-set and had red hair, medium height. She was a kind, loving mother. I was just going on four years old when my father died. There was only 11 months difference between the time of death of my parents. (Correction: pension application says there was a difference of 20 months.... her death date: 30 OCT 1886.) My father was taken 9 FEB 1885 of wounds received during Civil War. My mother died about JAN 1886 (actually died 30 OCT 1886) from typhoid fever. After the death of my father in Madison County, AR, we moved down off the mountain (lived in a log house) into the valley near White River (he thought it was in Scott County but was probably still in Madison County). After my mother died, we were all left alone so one of my uncles, GRANT ALLISON, took us all (6 children) to Putnam County, TN. When there we lived with my grandmother and step-grandfather, ELIZABETH PEGGY CLARK ALLISON BUTLER and TAYLOR BUTLER. I went to school at Bethham School at least five years. They didn't have grades then, only reading books were grades...1st reader, 2nd reader, etc. Studied spelling from "Blue-Back Speller". My work consisted of farming around the home. I met my wife, RUTH ANGELINE MAYNARD, at Zion Hill Church in Putnam County, 8th Dist. I went with her for two years and we married when I was about 18 or 19 (actual date: 30 OCT 1898). We got married at my home in Putnam County in October. (* Note: Their marriage license was issued and recorded in DeKalb County so his home may have been in DeKalb County as the line was so close). We rented a home for one year in DeKalb County, TN and then bought a home with 70 acres in DeKalb County (Brimer Hollers). We lived there for 2 or 3 years and sold part of place and moved up to Putnam County. Bought a home there with 20 acres... Dorsa was born there. Lived there about five years. After that moved down Putnam County near DeKalb County line. Lived there 10-12 years or more (14). From there we moved to Baxter, TN. We lived there until 1930 when we came to CA.
