Ellie,
Boy, what an elegant hotel. Right up there with the best. In Cleveland no less. Yes, I agree that we should pursue the Hollenden angle. Mom said that the name - as I mentioned yesterday - was Hollenden in the Netherlands, but was changed to Holden in England. The Hollendens moved from the Netherlands to England on their way to America.
Love,
Mary

HISTORY:
1 Nov 1974 I received a letter from Margaret Holden Muller with a photocoy of an old letter from Genova Law (my grandfather's sister) to a cousin...stated L.E. Holden of Cleveland, Ohio (note: found a history on L.E. Holden in Cleveland History...now in my possession. He was a very prominent man, an educator, later in mining in Salt Lake City and very wealthy) was going to see to the publishing of material another Holden of Hyattsville, Maryland had researched...England and Holland 1)Richard Holden 2)Justinian 3)Ebenezer 4)James 5)Benjamin
6)Pearson Bunyan Holden....name before William the conqueror was Hollenden...changed to Holden. L.E. Holden built a fine hotel in Cleveland and named it the Hollenden in honor of the old name. Note: I have seen the Holden Family book in library in Los Angeles and in Salt Lake. At present have not been able to tie in my Benjamin to this family. It may need additional looking into...note: This is definetely a clue to follow.
8-7-99 note from some research I did in Salt Lake...In Pilby books...set 1 v.2 there is a
Holden, James n.a.(no age I think) America 1763 1222 p133 Source: Coldham English Convicts in Colonial America Vol. 1-2....now I suppose that is a possibility. I'll send it to Jane Hodgson and see what she thinks.

THEORY REGARDING THE PLACE OF BIRTH OF BENJAMIN HOLDEN
A Benjamin HOLDEN served in Revolutionary War from Hunterdon Co NJ 1790
Federal Census shows a Benjamin HOLDEN in Essex Co NJ where a number of
Derumple families also live (family lore says Benjamin's first wife was a Derumple and the HOLDENs came from NJ) (There was also a Derumple family and 2 Benjamin Holdens in Mass.)
1850 Federal Census shows sons Benjamin and Peter W. were born in NJ
Early land records link Benjamin and Alexander with numerous deeds for land on Elk Creek in Harrison County, VA. They seem to be brothers. Early church records of Center Branch Baptist Church frequently refer problem matters for solution to Bros. Benjamin and A.C. Holden. Alexander bought and sold land 3 times to people from NJ or moving back to NJ.
William Chamberlain of Sussex Co NJ; Adam Hope of Hunterdon Co NJ; and then a 3rd where William Chamberlain moved back to NJ. These all seem to link the brothers to NJ.
The conclusion I draw from all these facts is that our Benjamin Holden is probably from NJ and possibly from Sussex or Essex or Hunterdon	Counties.
He may be descended from the Cape May Holdens or he may be descended from Holdens who came from England closer to the time of the Revolution in America.
The next step is to examine the land records in the 3 counties in NJ.

Notes:
Temple work originally done with Margaret Reed as mother of all the children. Later research revealed and information from Jane Hodgson, a cousin, revealed that Anna Lambert, married 1802 to Benjamin Holden would be the mother of Pearson...and two other children...
Corrections and resubmission is being made due to this newer inforamtion. Jane has 1st wife: Mary Jemina Dahlrymple 2nd: Anna Lambert 3rd: Margaret Reed. I need to find out the sources on all this.

Will names Margaret as wife of Benjamin.....
Have not located a marriage or death record for her...only place she is mentioned is in the will.

NEW RESEARCH indicated her name to be: Margaret Anna MARTENEY (AFN:1Q7K-VJD)
So temple work may already be done on this name....as there is an AFN number.....

Temple work on Margaret Reed was done as follows: B.12 Feb 1993 LV End:31 Mar 1993 no sealing to parent
Nothing can be done to change that......

Correction to data in my file is being changed to reflect the new research below.

Where the original name of Margaret Reed (father Thomas) came from....?not sure of source. Think it was from Jane Hodgson in Tucson,Arizona.

Dear Ellie,
I spoke to Merikay Mestad last night. She is actually researching the KITTLE family. Remember Prudence KITTLE?
Prudence is the daughter of Abraham KITTLE and Margaret MARTENEY. After Abraham died, Margaret married Benjamin Holden. Merikay has burial info from Randolph Co WV that lists the date of her death as 7 June 1858.
Now I searched the Centre Branch Church records and they show Margret Holden died 7 Jan 1858.
Margaret also married a George Bush after Benjamin's death. Merikay has the marriage of Margaret Holden to George Bush from Marriage Book 2 in Randolph Co 8 Oct 1832.
Oh, and Margaret is listed in her father, Carl Charles Marteney's will as Margaret Holden. That will is also in
Randolph Co.
So here is Margaret as I now believe her to have been:

THE BAPTIST CHURCH NAMED CENTRE BRANCH
HARRISON COUNTY, VIRGINIA (WV)

In 1837 there is a list of members, and among them:

Margret Holden

Now, I cannot be sure that this is the same Margaret from this list, and if she married George Bush in 1832, we could assume that it is not, but...

on another undated list we find:

Benjamin Holden 1 Deceased March 5th 1832 (I see too that the will was written in 1831)

Anna Holden 10 Deceased November 30 1824 (I had recorded it wrong, and see now that it is clearly 1824)

Margaret Holden

Then on a list of members in a new book in 1845, death dates are added later:

A LIST OF MEMBERS IN CENTRE BRANCH CHURCH IN 1845

Margret Holden 22 Deceased January the 7 1854 (This is too close to be mere coincidence, I would say this is our same Margaret. Jan and June are frequently confused. It looks to me like they continued to carry her on the church list though they never listed her new name Bush, and when she died they noted the death, though by now she was living some distance from the church.)
