A special valentine our ancestor wrote
Received an email from Bruce Ipe (Eib)....he'd found my name on a message board. He sent the most precious article about our ancestor George Kniseley chosing Anne Eib as a Valentine and the exact words we wrote to her. The actual Valentine is in the Historical Society in Clarksburg, West Virginia. The article was in Clarksburg---My Hometown Series by Dorothy Davis. In that piece there is the part about the valentine titled:
Early Valentine Linked Couple for Year By Dorothy Davis....
George wrote to Annie....whom he later married...
"My love, it being my lot to draw your name it gave me unexpressible joy to think of making choice of you for my Valentine in consideration of which I send you this small token as a sign of my unfeigned love and gratitude toward you, meaning nothing thereby but civility and good behaviour. I intend shortly to pay you a visit, and as I have not here room to reveal unto you the sentiments of my mind, I will then make them known unto you with my tongue, and only interpreter of my heart. Until which time I remain, Your most affectionate and humble servant, George Knisely to Ann Eibe, March 28, 1793."
In each scallop at the eage of the valentine is one word which if read clockwise tells: "A ring is round and has no end so is my love to you my friend."

In book: OLD GRIST MILLS OF HARRISON COUNTY By Harvey W. Harmer, in Clarksburg Library, Clarksburg, W. Va 26301...P115 "George Knisley applied to the county court, January 17, 1815, for permission to erect a dam, ten feet high, across Lost Creek to operate a water saw and grist mill on his land. The court awared him a writ of Ad Quad Damnum, the inquest to be returned February 23rd. No return or order was made. Knisley built his mill, but no one knows the exact date. He operated it for sometime before his death ,in 1835. Knisley had several children, and there is a reference to his will in a deed made by one son, yet no will is of record, nor did he make any deed conveying his property to his children. His children took his land under the LAW law of decent and made mutual partition of the land. At any rate his son, Abraham Knisley, sold and conveyed the sixty acres of land on which the mill was located to Samuel Sheets (note:Samuel Sheets married Georges oldest daughter, Elizabeth) by deed dated May 12, 1846. Samuel Sheets operated the mill until his death, near the close of the Civil War. The mill then became known as "Sheets Mill" and by that name continued to be known as long as it existed.etc. .(Note: It passed to his children, then was conveyed to Edwin Maxwell. The building eventually torn down about 1890's).

             CHAPTER XLV Auburn

The Kniseleys now claim our attention. George and Annie Eib Kniseley, both of Holland descent,
emigrated from Pennsylvania to Harrison county shortly after the American Revolution, as did the Eib
             family.
(My note: believe them to be German, not from Holland)
             CHAPTER XLV Auburn

Their family consisted of ten children, namely, Jacob, George, John, Washington, Abraham, Mary,
             Margaret, Susan, and Lucy.

             CHAPTER XLV Auburn

George married Miss Nancy Loveland and went to Illinois.

             CHAPTER XLV Auburn

Jacob married and remained in Harrison county.

             CHAPTER XLV Auburn

Abraham lived single until he had reached the age of near sixty-five years, when he married a Harrison
county lady, and shortly after, was thrown from a horse and killed.

             CHAPTER XLV Auburn

Mary was the late Mrs. Isaac P. Cox, of the Pocotaligo river, this state.

             CHAPTER XLV Auburn

Susan married Philip Cox and died in this county in 1886. Margaret was the late Mrs. Samuel Sheets,
of Harrison county. And Lucy was Mrs. Noah Smith, of Simpson's creek.

             CHAPTER XLV Auburn

Washington Kniseley married Miss Sarah Heckart and settled near Troy, in Gilmer county, many
years ago. Here, he died about 1880, and in the Auburn cemetery he lies at rest, by the side of his two
companions. His last wife, Mrs. Anna Cox Kniseley, being laid by his side in 1909.

             CHAPTER XLV Auburn

His daughter, Sarah, was the late wife of Oliver Cox, of Cox's mill; and his sons were John, and Daniel,
of the Auburn vicinity, who passed on a number of years ago, and Henry Kniseley.

             CHAPTER XLV Auburn

John Kniseley, who was so long prominently identified with the business affairs of this part of the
county, was married to Miss Julia McKinney, in 1839, and settled on Hacker's creek, in Lewis county,
where he remained until the early seventies, when he came to Auburn and purchased the Timothy
Tharpe and the Andrew Law homesteads, and took up his residence on the latter.

HISTORY OF CUMBERLAND AND ADAMS COUNTIES,
   PENNSYLVANIA

Book is not indexed, page 298:

"Mount Olivet Reformed Church dates back to March 19, 1745, when a Reformed and Lutheran congregation was organized. For nine years services were held in private houses until April 15, 1754, when Long Green Union Church was dedicated. In 1795 the church known as "Lower Bermudian" was erected on the site of Long Green Cabin, and the Lutherans and the Reformed Society worshipped here until 1871, when the new church of Mount Olivet was built, by the Reformed Society, near the site of the "Lower Bermudian".

The Lutheran Society was organized in March, 1745, as related above, and the history of the buildings is the same as that of the Reformed Church down to 1871. After the separation of that year the Lutherans continued to worship in the "Lower Bermudian" until December 6, 1879, when their new
building, "Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church" was completed and dedicated. This building stands almost on the site of the buildings of 1754 and 1795."

In 1797 a daughter named Catherine was born in York County, PA. She was baptized in the First Reformed Church of York County with her sponsors being Adam and Eva Fickes. In 1799 Elizabeth was born, and in 1800 Mary (Polly) was born and baptized in Christ Lutheran Church of York. Other children were Susan, Jacob, Nancy, George, Washington, Sarah, John, Abraham and Lucinda. In 1807 the family moved and purchased land in Harrison County, VA (WV). They appear in the 1810 Federal census of Harrison County, VA. In 1815 Annie's husband George built a dam with saw and grist mill over Lost Creek. He operated these mills for 20 years until his death. In 1818 daughter Elizabeth married Samuel Sheets and daughter Mary married Isaac P. Cox both in Harrison County, VA. Jane, maybe it means a street car...as there weren't any automobiles until later...as far as I know. It would be interesting to try and track down Scioto County records and see what we can come up with. Wonder when he died....do you have a date for him?
      Gotta run.

CEMETERY: How to get there...Follow 22k South. You will pass a spit, curve along the river, passing three more houses on the right and as you go into a hollow in the road, you will see a small cemetery on the right side. The Tombstone to the right of the entrance has the names of P.B. Holden and Samantha (Neisley) Holden. It is shaped like an obelisk. This information from a cousin, Jane Hodgson (Dan a Luthern minister), Tucson, AZ
which she received from Ruth Heitzman, 11085 RD 22K, Box 68, Cloverdale, Ohio (Putnam County, Ohio). She evidently is related and lives near the cemetery. Question: Believe Nancy Knisley and Samantha are the same person...However, have never seen the name Samantha on any records until this information arrived. According to Bible records Pearson was married to Nancy Knisley, she died in 1848 and he remarried several months later to Pricilla Ridenour. This is varified in census records also.

ARCHIVE: Archive record...Salt Lake City, Utah.

RESEARCH
In Harrison County, West Virginia personally....also in Family History Library, SLC,Utah.

CHAPTER XLV Auburn

Washington Kniseley married Miss Sarah Heckart and settled near Troy, in Gilmer county, many years ago. Here, he died about 1880, and in the Auburn cemetery he lies at rest, by the side of his two companions. His last wife, Mrs. Anna Cox Kniseley, being laid by his side in 1909.

CHAPTER XLV Auburn

His daughter, Sarah, was the late wife of Oliver Cox, of Cox's mill; and his sons were John, and Daniel, of the Auburn vicinity, who passed on a number of years ago, and Henry Kniseley.

CHAPTER XLV Auburn

John Kniseley, who was so long prominently identified with the business affairs of this part of the county, was married to Miss Julia McKinney, in 1839, and settled on Hacker's creek, in Lewis county, where he remained until the early seventies, when he came to Auburn and purchased the Timothy Tharpe and the Andrew Law homesteads, and took up his residence on the latter.

CHAPTER XLV Auburn

Being a man of great energy, he was one of the most prosperous farmers and stock-dealers in this section. of the country. He took an active interest in church affairs, and was a generous contributor to the cause. The pretty Methodist Protestant church home of this town, which was burned to the ground, on Sunday, December 12, 1909, was chiefly the work of his own hands.

CHAPTER XLV Auburn

When the weight of years forced him to give up his business pursuits, turning his beautiful old homestead over to his son, Thomas, he removed to a little home in the north of this town, where he resided until this home was broken up by the death of his aged companion, near the year 1896. He died during the month of February, 1898. Both sleep in the Auburn cemetery. This venerable couple celebrated their golden wedding during the early summer of the year 1889 -an event which has been recorded in the lives of comparatively few of the citizens of this county.

CHAPTER XLV Auburn

They were the parents of five children; viz., Edward, Abraham, Thomas, Julia, and Sarah.

CHAPTER XLV Auburn

Edward remained in Lewis county.
