MILITARY: One of his grandson's biographies says that because Henry was too young to serve in the war, he was a page. However, his son William's biography states that he served as a private under Colonel Burgess. RESEARCH NOTES: -From the Vorce GenForum page: "Alice, My Vorce line has Carlo Vorce [Vorse] born 1801 in Greene, Chenango Cty, NY. He married Samantha Tolles, about 1829, in Genesee Cty, NY; they moved to Kalamazoo, MI. I believe, but cannot prove, that Carlos was the son of Henry Vorse who went to Greene in about 1794 from Cherry Valley (now in Schoharie Cty, I think), NY. He had known children: Mary (1795- ), Urania (1805- ), Elizabeth (1807- ), and William. I believe he had also sons Carlos (1801-1850) and Henry (1793-1874). Henry also went to Michigan. Also perhaps Solomon was a son. Do you have any thots? -Dale McOmber" -1800 Census of Greene, Chenango, NY shows Henry Vorse with 3 males 0-10, himself as 26-44, 2 females 0-10, and one female 26-44. -1810 Census of Greene, Chenango, NY shows Henry Voorse 3 males 0-10, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 16-25, 1 male over 45, 2 females under 10, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 26-44. HISTORICAL NOTES: -The first grist mill in Greene was built by Abraham Storm and Henry Vorse. Henry came from Cherry Valley in 1793, according to a reference from "1874 History of Chenango & Madison Counties, NY" -Said to have five sons and three daughters, as stated in the biography of the Hon. James Underwood, who was a grandson. The Biography is published in "The United States Biographical Dictionary and Portrait Gallery of Eminent and Self-made Men - Iowa Volume," (pg 80-82) and as reprinted on the website http://files.usgwarchives.net/ia/greene/bios/underwoo112nbs.txt. The pertinent Vorse family text reads: "His (James Underwood's) maternal grandfather, Henry Vorse, a millwright by occupation, was a man of superior intellect; being too young to enter the army, he served as page to an officer during the revolutionary war. He had a family of five sons and three daughters, of whom four are now (1877) living. Henry Vorse, about eighty- three years of age, is a resident of Kalamazoo, Michigan; one of the daughters is living at Binghamton, New York; the younger brother, William Vorse, a mechanic, lives near St. Paul, Minnesota. The mother of our subject, now eighty years old, is living with him. -The history of Greene, Chenango, NY, found at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nychenan/1880-19.htm states: "Abraham Storms, from Coxsackie, and Henry Vorse, from Cherry Valley, came in as early as 1794, in which year they built, on the Tillotson farm, at the mouth of Crandall Creek, which empties into the Chenango about two and one-half miles above Greene village, the first grist-mill in the town. Storms brought in with him from the Hudson River country the stones for the mill, with a yoke of oxen. The mill did not stand many years, as every vestige of it was gone in 1807. The creek upon which it stood is now mostly dried up. Previously, the most accessible mill was at Tioga Point....Vorse's children living are: Polly, widow of Jonas Underwood, in Illinois; Betsey, widow of Zenas Chase, in Michigan; and William, probably in Minnesota. All of his children removed from the town at an early day, except Urania, who married Samuel Race, and lived in the town till her death, November 6, 1866."
NOTE: No other children found
NAME: VORSE or VORCE or VOCE RESEARCH NOTE: The connection between Carlo Vorse and father Henry Vorse is circumstantial. Though there is no conclusive evidence that links these two, all of the information suggests that Carlo is the son of Henry. Several of the other children of Henry Vorse also moved to Michigan. Carlo was dead by 1850, but several histories of siblings and nephews written afterwards list Henry's living children. It is known that there were several more children in the Henry Vorse family than what were listed as living in the histories of the late 1800's, as the cesnsus records show several young boys and girls in his household. For more information see the historical notes of his father, Henry Vorse.
