Note from Linda 2-7-07: After you told me it was Pierce, I do know that it is correct as my mother told me the same. I had just forgotten. It's been very interesting - most everything my mom told me has turned out to be true so I guess the little she knew was very valuable.

NOTE FROM LINDA CARLSON - 22 Aug 2006
I found the Willborn name. What do you make of this? John W. Samples, father of William P. Samples (my grandfather). Adopted by the Willborn's? John W.'s father was Matthew Noah Samples, but it says his mother was "unknown". Wonder if the Willborn's were the unknown mother's parents?

NOTE FROM LINDA CARLSON - 12 Sep 2006
See: More Elijah Wellborn family information (remember - you said, "good age for a grandfather"). Our guess is correct. He and Agnes Ann Craig had a daughter, Elizabeth who died a few months after John W.Samples was born in Dec. 1843/mother died 1844 probably shortly after the birth possibly of infection as was common then, but just a guess (John W. being my grandfather Will's father). At 6 months, John W. was living with his mother's parents, Elijah and Agnes Wellborn per the 1850 census. Perhaps the father, Matthew Noah Samples, took care of the three older children since they were ages 4, 6 and 10 but the grandmother, Agnes, took over the care of the infant since dad probably was not able to do diapers and feeding and work, although his older daughter, Sarah, could have helped.Elizabeth Wellborn Samples died in early 1844 and then Matthew remarried to a Melinda Hansard in May and they went on to have another 10 children After Melinda, Matthew married a Mary E. Howell, but no children are listed.I absolutely believe that Elizabeth Wellborn Samples was my grandfather's paternal grandmother and I believe that's the reason my grandfather named his firstborn son Wellborn, especially since Will's father and his siblings were from the first wife (the Wellborns) - they probably wanted to differentiate themselves and their line from their step-siblings (their father's children with his second wife) that came later. If you read through the comments at the bottom of the page I gave you (the URL link above), you will see some of the Civil War history - seems this group served with the Union under Andrew Jackson. Definitely fits with the (limited) oral history of the Samples family that came down to me, although I have few specifics. It will be interesting to see if I can find the Confederate side eventually. I could be incorrect about these links, but the info fits with the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Forsythe Co., Georgia, e.g. two different sources agree. Fascinating stuff, this genealogy:) Best regards, Linda

Email to Linda Carlson 19 Sep 2006. Carolyn Hall received three articles from the Roswell Journal. I thought there were several interesting facts to add to the history of his life. It gave his address in Roswell, 112 N. Kansas, that he was sick with the white plague for 8 months before he died.
"White plague is a name for any epidemic disease that makes the patients appear pale, mostly tuberculosis during the 19th and early 20th century."
That he had moved to Roswell nine years before he died which makes it 1908.

[Email from Linda Carlson, granddaughter of Rose, 20 Jun 2006.]
Yes, my grandmother Rose and her husband lived in Roswell, New Mexico for a time. My mom always said she was born in Commerce, Texas, but that they also lived in Roswell, New Mexico for awhile. She was little and had no idea why they were there or where they lived. She was born in 1911 and was in the Masonic Home (orphanage) in Ft. Worth by the time she was about age 6 (1917-1918??). My grandfather was a barber and also sold insurance. Again, no additional information on the Roswell connection. A joint business opportunity perhaps? Who knows? No, to my knowledge, since the Norsworthy line from Rose ends here with me, there is no one left who would have any family photos or documents. I have photos of Rose, her husband, and her three children (there were only two grandchildren born - but I am the only living one left - the other had no children and was not married), but there is nothing back further than Rose herself, unfortunately. I have no idea what happened to her oil paintings, nor is there anyone left living to ask. My mom said they were landscapes. It is truly sad that they are gone, but I have to choose to be happy to have the photographs that I do have, and for having my mom around for a very long time.I have a hunch that there will be additional interesting information from somewhere about the Norsworthy line - it's waiting to be discovered in some remote corner:)

[Email from Linda Carlson, 25 Jun 2006]
I was so excited on Friday to read the census page that I was not careful in what I wrote to you. I have no idea if Rose had a twin, but I doubt it. That kind of information usually does come down in the family oral history, and it has not. I knew all Rose's children and visited with them both as a child and as an adult and never heard anything about Rose being a twin. I think it is more likely that her given name was Rozetta (however it's spelled) and she went by a shorter version, Rose. I was just so excited to learn this information - it's a piece of info that I'll treasure. It's all I could talk about on my commute home, driving with a friend.Rose was born in January and my mom told me that she died in January, just a day before her 70th birthday, so as soon as I saw the "Jan" entry in the census page, I knew it was her. (She was born in Jan 1880/died in Jan 1950 = age 70). Besides, the dates do fit well together. Although, I guess in the genealogy business, there's no such thing as 100% absolutely sure about anything - but it's close enough for me to believe it.
