RESEARCH NOTE: There is an extracted record for the birth of Janet Brown in St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland christened on 12 Mar 1843 to the parents of Alexander Brown and Mary Henderson, it is not likely that this is the same individual. Also, Jennet Brown is likely not the daughter of James Cant Brown, but is most likely the illegitimate child of Margaret Christie and an unknown man. Several factors confuse this issue, but it appears that Jennet was adopted by James Cant Brown, as Jannet was sealed to him during her lifetime, and he is listed as her father on the death certificate. It is probable that Jennet was actually raised by her grandparents, Thomas Christie and Janet Anderson, not uncommon for an illigitimate birth. Jennet was located on the 1851 Census in Dunfermline living in the home of her grandparents, Thomas and Janet Christie. This family lived next door to James Cant Brown and Margaret Anderson Christie, who were recently married and had just had their first child. Also in the Brown home was a nephew, James Brown, age 14. By 1861 the Brown family had moved to Liberton, across the bay from Dunfermline, in an outlying community near Edinburgh, some 20 miles away. Jennet did mot move with her mother and adoptive father, but stayed with her widowed grandmother. One year later she married James Ellis Hoggan in Dunfermline.
He married Margaret Anderson Christie 25 Dec 1848 at Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland . Margaret Anderson Christie was born at Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland 6 Oct 1826 daughter of Thomas Christie and Janet Anderson .
