Taken from a family history written by Ellen (Ella) Winn Kessel, 1951-52. Aided by contributions from various members of the family. She was the granddaughter of Joseph Demont Carter. Joseph and Elizabeth Pierce Carter, were both natives of Virginia, and of English lineage. The father, Joseph Carter, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He served under General Washington, and was present at the final surrender at Yorktown.
He married Mrs. Benjamin Carter Abt 1768 at of Frederick, Virginia . Mrs. Benjamin Carter was born at of Frederick, Virginia Abt 1745 .
