Henley W. J. HAMNER

My gggrandfather,Henley W. J. Hamner was 33 when he enlisted. He is listed as a corporal on the company muster roll dated 12 June 1862.  He served in Co.F (The North River Tigers) 38th Alabama Infantry Volunteers.  His regiment was one of the many that did not cover itself in fame and glory during the war; even though it saw action at Chicamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Mt. Resaca, New Hope Church, Atlanta, covered Hood's retreat from Tennesee, and Spanish Fort.  Only 80 men survived to surrender the regiment at war's end.  My gggrandfather was not one of them.  He fell 21 July 1864 defending Atlanta from the hirelings of William T(orch) Sherman.  By the time of his death he had been promoted to rank of 2nd Lt.
