1895 Kansas State Census - Herman Blochberger family, Line: 11, image 48 of 746
LARRY_DODGE'S_OBSERVATIONS: This is interesting and fits the time and place. There was an Edward Blochberger married to a Francis in Leavenworth also. Not enough information to know for sure who it is. I think the Edward Blochberger married to Francis was still alive in the 1905 Kansas State Census so it could be our Herman? There is an Edmund or Edward Blochberger in early city directories for Leavenworth. Are they related? Kansas Semi Weekly Capitol (Topeka, Kansas) Volume: XIX Issue: 51 Page: 2 BROKE HIS SKULL ---------------------- A Groceryman Uses a Heavy Shovel On a Leavenworth Butcher Special to the Capital. Leavenworth, Kan. June 23, --Tonight at 7 o'clock. Edward Blockberger, a butcher, was hit in the head with a shovel and possibly fatally injured by Henry Woerner, proprietor of a grocery store. Woerner was unloading some cinders, in a manner which Blochberger claimed would interfere with the opening of a gate to his premises. Blochberger de- manded that woerner desist and on his refusal to do so went into the house and brought out a pistol to shoot him. When Blochberger pointed it at Woerner the latter felled him to the ground by break- ing his skull with a blow from a heavy shovel. ------------------------------------ SPECULATION: 1894 City Directory Herman is Listed 1895 Kansas State Census herman is with his family 1896 Directory Martha is listed as the widow of Herman. He had to have died before they printed the 1896 City Directory.

LARRY_DODGE'S_OBSERVATIONS: It would appear that Herman dies some time after June 1900 and before Susan remarries in 1904. I do not find him in the 1905 or later censuses. He does not register for the draft in WWI. I realize that divorces happened even back then but usually the parties were still around SPECULATION: Herman F Blochberger is listed in the city directory in 1900 and in 1902. Sue Blochberger listed in 1903 is listed for the first time. Martha is listed as the widow of Herman F. This implys to me that both Herman Sr and Herman Jr are Herman F with Sr having died in late 1895 and Jr in about 1902.
LARRY_DODGE'S_OBSERVATIONS: I am uncertain, but I think this Edward Herman is the Ed Blochberger in this family. I see that at least one tree on Ancestry has him as a son of Edward and Francis but I think their oldest son is born in 1877. I'll try to look at it again tomarrow.
LARRY_DODGE'S_OBSERVATIONS: She Moves to Kansas City and is still working there in 1925, then I lose her.
