Notes:
William II and Catherine Kankey Cox lived at Mill Creek Hundred in New Castle Co, DE. Around 1742 William and Catherine purchased land in Grayson, Loudoun Co VA, and the whole family moved there. In 1757 or so, William sold out and moved to Cane Creek MM area with all but two of his daughters. His will is in Orange Co, NC, Will Book A, p 53, dated January20, 1776 and it was proven in February of that year. Catherine diedJanuary 20, 1767 in Orange County, North Carolina. The children of,William Jr. and Catharine can be found in the Quaker records of Cane Creek, Holly Springs, New Garden and others in NC.

William Cox had received land grants and then he bought land in 300-400acre lots. By the time he died, he owned a large part of the county. They lived near Deep River, North Carolina. William (II) in his 1767will, left his son William (III) the land on the west side, calledTherehill or Thitherhill, and the land on the east side of Deep River tohis son Harmon Cox. He left his son John the west half of the homeplace, and to Thomas the east. Solomon got some land on Brush Creek. His willalso mentions some land "that my brothers lived on" verifying that Johnand Thomas did own land there as well. He made his cousin Isaac (son ofThomas) his executor along with his own son, William. He left hisdaughter three pounds, except Rebecca Dixon and Mary Lindley he left onlyfive shillings. Mary's husband was a Tory, and was hunted down andkilled for it. Rebecca and Margery chose to stay behind in Virginia whenthe rest of the family moved on.
William and Catherine built "Cox's Mill" on Mill Creek of Deep River.Their son, Harmon ran a gristmill on the eastside of Deep River onMillstone Creek. In 1755 a tax list for Randolph County Taxables liststhe following Cox members: William Cox, son of Benjamin - no land nopolls; Nathaniel Cox - 200 acres 1 poll; Abel Cox - 575 Acres 1 poll;Joshua Cox - 900 acres 1 poll; Joseph Cox - 570 acres 1 poll; andWilliam, son of Joseph, no land 1 poll.

William Cox was the charter member of several Quaker churches. Anotherresearcher found several old marriage records where people were marriedat the home of William Cox. The Hockessin Friends Church was held in thehome of William Cox for five years, until they could build their ownmeetinghouse. When they came to Loudoun County they were transferred tothe Hopewell MM because there was no Fairfax MM yet. Then, after that,William Cox goes to Cane Creek and is a charter member there. There arealso traces of a William Cox in Cecil County, MD in the late 1720's so hewas probably instrumental in setting up MM there as well.

Newark MM, New Castle County, DE on 7 Jan 1758 William Cox Sr grantedcertificate to Cane Creek MM,NC
-Cane Creek MM, Orange County, NC on 5 Aug 1758 William Cox received oncertificate from Newark MM Delaware
The Cane Creek Quaker meeting is about 20 miles south of Burlington inSnowden, North Carolina. William Cox and Catharine Kankey were chartermembers as he was for several other churches.

"These were democratic protests in the sense that the westerners were notfairly represented in the Virginia and Pennsylvania legislatures. A fewyears later a more serious conflict known as the Regulator War broke outin North Carolina. Again, eastern domination of the legislature was theprimary cause. The protesters, known as "regulators," committed manylocal acts of violence while protesting against high taxes and otherforms of legislative mistreatment. In 1771 the governor, William Tryon, sent more than a thousand militia west. They routed two thousandregulators at the Battle of the Almance. The leading regulators were thenexecuted and the movement collapsed."

Title: The Regulators
Author: Richard Henry Lee
Year:1771
Type of document: letter

Quotation: "Lawyers, bad everywhere, but in Carolina [are] worse thanbad"

Annotation:
Even as tension between the colonies and Britain was rising, disputesamong colonists continued. In western North Carolina, many farmers, knownas Regulators, rose up against wealthy lawyers and merchants, who chargedexcessive fees for legal services and manipulated debt laws. The royalgovernor needed more than a thousand troops to defeat the Regulators atthe Battle of Alamance on May 16, 1771. In this letter, Richard Henry Lee(1732-1794), a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a leader ofthe patriot cause in Virginia, discusses the North Carolina Regulatormovement and Gov. William Tryon's suppression of it by force.
Full Text:
you may know, that the Lawyers, bad everywhere, but in Carolina worsethan bad, having long abused the people in the most infamous manners atlength brought things to such a pass, that a bond of L500 was taken for asingle fee in trifling causes, and this bond put in suit and recoveredbefore the business was done for which the fee was paid. Grieved in thismanner without being able to obtain redress, the people were at lengthdriven by repeated injuries to do what otherwise they would never havethought of. The Governor himself in his speech to the Assemblyacknowledges the grievances and recommends enquiry & redress, but insteadof accompanying the redress with an Act of Amnesty...it was at lengthagreed by the Governor to allow a certain space of time for theInsurgents to consider about laying down their Arms, and that before theallowed time was elapsed, he fell upon the unsuspecting multitudes andmade great slaughter with his Cannon....

On February 27, 1779, the New Garden MM received the children of Williamand Juliatha in membership: Rebeckah, Benjamin, Catharine, & Juliatha, receiving their certificate from the Cane Creek MM dated December 5,1778. This would indicate they have moved to the Guilford County, NorthCarolina area about this time. In 1767 both William and Juliatha weredismissed from the Cane Creek Meeting because of the family's involvementin the Regulator Movement, thus only William's children are transferringthe membership. They later settled in Montgomery (Grayson) Co, VA.Juliatha died after 1779 either in Virginia or Tennessee in the home ofJohn and Juliatha Canaday.

They were disowned for their involvement in the Regulator movement.

Solomon's descendants hold an annual reunion on the first Sunday of eachAugust. It's held at Cole Creek, Grayson CO VA. There is a book titled:Descendants of Solomon COX of Cole Creek VA and Other Early COX Ancestryof the Cole Creek Coxs, 1955; an effort of several descendants.

Chatham Co NC Deed Bk L, p 283, 18 Apr 1799: Solomon COX of Chatham Co NCconveys to William COX of Randolph Co NC tract of land in Chatham Co, onLittle Brush Creek on Deep River, containing 300 acres, part of the landwilled to the said Solomon COX by his father William, who obtained thesame from the Earl of Granville by grant dated 13 Nov 1756. U, p283, 28Aug 1815: Enoch COX of Grayson Co, VA, William COX and Ruth his wife ofRandolph Co. NC, and Joseph COX of Ross Co OH, they being part of theheirs of Solomon COX, deceased and empowered by the rest of the heirs andby law to dispose of the property, convey to William COX Sr, a parcel ofland on Little Brush Creek, waters of Deep River, containing 187 acres, being a remaining part of a tract of land willed to Solomon COX by hisfather William COX and descended by inheritance to the aforesaid Enoch,William and Ruth, and son Joseph and the rest of the heirs.
Solomon was Naomi's cousin, once removed. They were minors who had tohave their parent's permission to marry. They settled about four milesSSE of Asheboro, NC at a place then known as Solomon's Mountain and nowknow as Cox's Mountain. Naomi's brother, Stephen settled about one milesouth. The family migrated to Cole Creek in southwestern Virginia andNaomi died in childbirth soon after the move.

Solomon was counseled by the local meeting for buying a slave and"disposing of him." Because of their opposition to slavery, the localmeeting would have been upset even if Solomon bought the slave, even withthe express purpose of setting him free, which was a common practice issome meetings. There is a diary written by R. E. COX born 1870, whorelated that often as a boy = he heard his grandfather, Jeremiah COX,tell stories he had been told of the Revolutionary War...among them thestory of Solomon COX fighting in the battle of Kings Mountain, told bySolomon to his grandson Jeremiah. The Cane Creek Meeting receivedSolomon on October 6, 1753.
