NAME: Alexander "Sandy" McGUFFEY NOTES: 1. William served as an Indian scout in the Ohio Valley from 1790 until after General Wayne's victory at Fallen Timbers in 1794. BIRTH: Possibly born in Wigstone, Gallowshire, Gallow Hill, Aberdeen, Scotland.
NOTES: 1. William lived in a simple one-roomfrontier log home, built about 1780, in Washington County, Pennsylvania, until he was two years old, when his parents packed up their homestead and headed further west to the Ohio wilderness. 2. Will created the McGuffey's, series of Eclectric Readers based on his unique upbringing and experiences on the Ohio frontier. 3. His easy-to-understand readers were widely used school textbooks in the mid-1800's, and were a favorite of Henry Ford. 4. William was teaching at subscription schools by the time he was 14 years old. 5. He accepted a professorship in ancient languages at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, in February of 1826, before receiving his B.A. from Washington College. 6. William was ordained as a Presbyterian minister March 29, 1829, preaching occasionally at the University and in nearby Darrtown. 7. He served as president of Cincinnati College from 1836 to 1839, when he accepted the presidency of Ohio University. He resigned from that position in 1843 and moved his family back to Cincinnati. 8. The family moved into his brother Alexander's home and William taught at Woodward College from 1843 to 1845. 9. In 1845, he accepted a professorship in moral philosophy at the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he was to remain for the rest of his life.
NOTES: 1. Henry studied medicine in New Castle, Pennsylvania. 2. Henry and Nancy had seven children born to them in Claysville, Pennsylvania, five of whom survived. 3. They were living in Trumbull County, Ohio with seven children at the time of the 1830 census. 4. Three more children were born in Boone County, Kentucky, where the family moved in 1836.

NOTES: 1. Died of typhoid fever.
NOTES: 1. Alexander assisted his brother with the famous readers and was alone responsible for the 1838 speller and the fifth reader.
He married Anna Holmes 25 Dec 1797 at Rural Grove, Washington, Pennsylvania . Anna Holmes was born at Ulster, Ireland Abt 1776 daughter of Henry Holmes and Jane Roney .
