Anders was a sheriff. As he was pursuing someone over the mountain, he met my grandmother, Maren Sorensen Bjerkerud, who was tending the cows in the high country for the summer. I was told that my grandfather, Anders, wanted to
rest and while he was napping, grandma took soot from the fire and painted his face. Later they were married, about 1908. He and his wife, Maren Sofie Sorensen, lived on the farm Bjorkerud. The Bjorkerud farm belonged to the Sorensen family. The papers showing ownership of this farm are in the possession of Maren Elizabeth Nohre Mason - grand daughter of Anders Knudsen Nohre and Maren Sofie Sorensen.

% Kristian was born before their marriage.

Anders died in the flu epidemic of 1918. I was told he refused to drink any liquor that his doctor had recommended and so chocked to death. (all of the information recorded above is according to the account of my father Knut Anders Nohre). This was written by Maren Elizabeth Nohre Mason.

Anders was the youngest of 4 children. He had 2 older brothers (who never married) and 1 sister. He was raised Lutheran, which is the state church.

A daughter, Maren, was born in 1913. She was pronounced a healthy big baby girl, but 5 hours later she died. No ones seems to know the cause. Knut remembers picking a bouquet of flowers for her. He was able to see his mother with his baby sister. (Knut was about 4 years old at this time).

The family in Norway seems to think that Anders K. Nore is the first to have changed the spelling of his last name to Nohre. This is the spelling on the grave marker in the family cemetary in Modum, Buskerud, Norway. It is also the way my father spelled our family name.

y her grand daughter Maren Elizabeth Nohre Mason.

Maren was said to have a sense of humor. She painted her future husband's face with ashes from the hearth at the summer cabin in the mountains where she was staying tending the cows for the summer. Anders was a sheriff who was tracking a criminal across the mountain. He had stopped and asked to rest a while. It was while he was asleep that she fixed his face.

Maren was confronted with a bear either at the summer cabin or at the farm.
The story is told "she took off her petticoat and yelled while she shook it at the bear scaring him away".

Maren Sofie Sorensen's mother died one week after she was born. She was raised from the age of 1 week by her father's brother and sister, Uncle Kristian and Aunt Siri, on the Bjorkerud farm, neither of them ever married. She was raised Lutheran.
She would have the Lutheran priest into her home for coffee and a visit quite often. She was curious about religion.

Her first cousin was Sofie Thomasdtr. who died of TB along with her husband. Grandma Maren Sofie Sorensdtr. Nohre took her cousin's 5 year old daughter, Sigrid, and raised her as her own child. Sigrid's brother, Kristian, went to live with Astrid Svendby's parents.

I was told Maren had blond hair, was good looking, strict but a good heart.
It was difficult to be a widow at that time.
   She was about 170-175 cm tall 175cm = 5'9".

Uncle Kristian was in the Norwegien Air Force and I was told he was a very bright individual who spoke
5 or 7 different languages. He was attacked by group of rowdies at the May 1 festival and was hit with a board on the head. The altercation came about because he was very pro-Norway and others at the gathering were alligned with the Communist Party. Physical damage was such that eventually he was not able to be left alone. After his mother's death he was placed in a home in Brodholt, Lier. He was two years older than my father Knut Nohre. Was raised in the Luthern faith. He never married. About a head shorter than Knut and thinner. Had dark blond hair.
