OCCUPATION: Farmer/Landlord RELIGION: John and his wife were members of the German Lutheran Church. NOTES: 1. John OTT or OTTO came to USA in 1856 according to the Biographical Record of DeKalb County, Illinois (FHL#997.328 D3B) 2. John took ship at Hamburg and was about six weeks on the Atlantic. He landed at New York and went directly West to Illinois and located in Big Rock Township, Kane County. 3. In August 1861 John enlisted in company B. Thirty Sixth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and went with his regiment to St.Louis, and later participated in the Battle of Pea Ridge, Perryville and Missionary Ridge. He then participated in the Atlantic Campaign, being in various engagements, in one of which he was wounded, being shot through the foot and captured by the enemy in engagement of Stone River. He was teken to Lebby Prison, where he remained some five or six months, was then exchanged, and later sent to St. Louis, but joined his regiment in Tennessee, participating in several battles and skirmishes until the close of the war. 4. Among other engagements in which he participated were Chickamauga, Kenesau Mountain, Franklin and Nashville. He was finally discharged at Springfield after four years of service. 5. Returning to Big Rock Township, Kane County, he there remained until the Spring of 1866, when he went to DeKalb County, and purchased forty acres of raw land, on which a small house had been erected.

RESEARCH NOTE: Family Records indicate that Wilhelm was the son of Sophie's sister, and that the sister died at sea on her way to the US. However, Sophie's only known sister is shown on immigration records as arriving with her family November 1865. She may have died soon after.
NAME: Listed as Minnie A. on 1900 Census. RESEARCH NOTES: 1. Amelia's parents both listed as being born in Germany on 1900 Census. 2. Amelia's death certificate gives another surname, indicating 2nd marriage for Sophia STOLDT, her mother.
