He served in the Union Army from 19 April 1861 until 4 June 1861, tn Company D, 10 Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry. During this service he lost a finger at the batle at Chambersburg, in Virginia. He later enlisted on 8 October 1861 and was discharged on 14 October 1862 while serving in Virginia. During this second enlistment he served in Company H, 58 Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry.
He died in the National Soldiers Home, in Dayton, Ohio. I believe he was taken back to Montoursville, Pennsylvania to be buried.
His physical description says that he was 5 ft. 6 in. tall, with a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He was not able to write.
His wife, Lavinia Reed applied for a soldiers pension in 1907.
His son Martin received a telegram on 25 April 1907, informing him that his father had died at the Soldiers Home in Dayton, Ohio.
The 1870 census listed Peter as 32 years old and was living in Danville, PA in the 3rd. Ward.
