Obituary: Deseret News Joseph Richard Shafer, age 79, died July 22, 1995, in West Valley City after an extended battle with heart disease. Born March 19, 1916, in Salt Lake City, a son of Clifford Alvin and Elizabeth Lillie Rupp-Park Shafer. Married Norma Petersen on March 29,1938, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Member of the LDS Church. Past president of Granger Lions Club. Loved hunting, fishing and the Utah Jazz Played semi-pro baseball for Magna-Garfield; coached youth baseball teams. Former Deputy Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office. Retired founder of Joe's Sporting and Marine Co. in West Valley City. Played key role in Granger Community Birthday Calendar drives to purchase land for the Granger Community Park. Co-founder of Joe-Lee Bowling Lanes in Roy. Survived by his wife Norma of West Valley City; sons and daughters, Richard L. (Gladys) Shafer of Bluffdale, Norman Joe (Melanie) Shafer and Fern (Harold) Hanson of West Valley City, Linda (Joseph) Kemp of Mountain Home, Dianne Child of Clearfield, Mary (David) Miller of Farmington; 45 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, William B. "Bill" (Jean) Shafer of West Valley City, Pauline Breshears of Murray, Lila Wendel of New Mexico. Preceded in death by parents and brothers, Alvin, Arthur, Victor, Clarence and Lee. Funeral services wil be held Wednesday, 12 noon at Granger 26th Ward, 3751South 2200 West. Friends may call Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and Wednesday at the church, 11-11:45 a.m. Interment, Valley View Memorial Park.
