Stephen BACHILER

                   Name Suffix: RevBIOGRAPHY: Grad St John's College, Oxford. Came in "William & Francis" June 1632, age 71 (Noyes, Gen. Dist. of ME & NH). He was leader of the group of settlers which founded Hampton, NH, but then he returned to England. "The leader of the group was the Rev. Steven Bachiler, a man of remarkable mental and physical vigor. Although 77 years old, his eye was not dim nor his natural force abated. Indeed, he was to live to be 100 [not quite], and at 80, marry his third [fourth?] wife. Among his descendants were to be the poet Whittier and New England's greatest statesman, Daniel Webster." After founding Hampton, he returned to England.

Entered St. Johns College, Oxford on 17 Nov. 1581, and admitted as Bachelor of Arts, Feb. 3, 1585-6. Went to New England when he was 71. Returned to England before he died. "He sailed on the 9th of March 1631-2 in the vessel called the "William and Francis" from London, with 60 passengers, and after 88 dreary days landed at Boston. Among his fellow travelers were Gov. Edward Winslow, of Plymouth, Rev. Thomas James, Rev. Thomas Wedde and Thomas Oliver, the famous ruling elder of Boston." His widowed daughter, Deborah Wing, also sailed on the William and Francis, and probably at the same time. One author gives the possible name of Deborah's mother as Ann Bates.
