MARRIAGE: Index to Marriages, Brown County, Texas; FHL book 976.4548 V22l. EVENT: When Nancy was 17 she was attacked by a pet bear at her Uncle John Williams house. The old rock house was down on Brown's Creek--known now as the Sheffield place. She was washing clothes in the creek and started to the house for something when their pet bear grabbed her as she climbed over a rail fence. The bear tore her up awfully bad, but she finally got away from him and got to the house. They threw fresh meat out to the bear and some women slipped out of the house on the other side and got on a horse and went after the men folks. Then the men went after the doctor. She still had several bad scars from that awful bear fight when she died July 22, 1931, at the age of 70 years. Taken from the book "Mills County, Memories"
