HISTORY: In an article on William Hill from"Wheeler's Reminiscences, Wake County, North Carolina 1884" the son of William Hill writes about his father: "William Hill, Jr., who removed from Caroline County, Virginia, was a Baptist minister, a sterling patriot and an honest man. During the war of the Revolution, his stirring appeals stimulated the Whigs of this Section. He was Chaplain in the American army at the battle of Guilford Courthouse. His son William was then about eight years old, and he well recollected hearing the roar of the artilllery, being only four miles distant from the field of battle. He has been heard to relate that a short time prior to this battle a band of Tories called at his father's house, where he and his mother were, and inquired for his father. On being told that he was not at home they departed, avowing their intention to hang him if they found him. He had incurred their hate by his devotion to the patriot caurs. He was a member of the convention that met at Hillsboro in August, 1775, to improvise a system of government for the State. The maiden name of his wife, the mother of the subject memoir, was Eliza Halbert. She was a native of Caroline county. William Hill, Jr. moved to North carolina a few years earlier than his father. He owned a place on the Dan River, in what is now Rockingham County, called Popular Hill. He was a member of the Committee of Safety for the Salisbury District in 1775."
