John Peter EPPELE

In 1717 (or 1732) Peter Apfel came from Germany and settled in Monocacy as early as 1729 near Thurmont. Peter owned a Mill near Thurmont. The Apple's Reformed Church near Thurmont, held services in German for Reformed & Lutheran Congregations. Peter's wife Maria Catharina Henkel was the daughter of a Lutheran pastor. One of the Lutheran pastors was Phillip Matthews (Mathias), grandson of Peter Apple. A Mathias Ambrose died about 1782, he gave money to the "Church at Peter Apple's called Jacob's Church" 1790 a John Weller Sr. and Henry Mathias were the executors of Peter Apple's will. In June 1748 Peter Apple was one of the Germanic settlers who protested their treatment by tax collectors to the Maryland Council. HISTORY: Peter Apfel (Pieter Appel) came to America in 1732 on same ship as Bernard Weymer. He settled with wife Catherine on the southern part of the Rocky Creek tract in ther Ballenger Creek area south of Frederick. They may have been the owners of Appel's Mill on the Ballenger Creek.
