He was hereitary chief butler of Ireland and recieved the family name. He was a nephew of Ranulf de glouville, Henry II justicarrose. His borther was Hubert Walter Archbishop of Canterbury. He went to Ireland 1171 with the Kings son John 1183. He was awarded large land grant now part of Tipperary. He founded the Arklow monastery. He spent the rest of his life however in England in John's service. he did returen to Ireland at the end of his life.
