Notes:
                   MARRIAGE DATE-PLACE:
York County, Pennsylvania; St. Matthews Luthern Church; FHL film #020499--Matthias'
marriage to Anna Maria Ritter. Marriage performed by Rev. C. F. Wildbahne.
CHILDREN:
Emmanual Reformed Church, Hanover, Pennsylvania. FHL film #20,499.
Matthias Eble and Christiana are listed as the parents of Maria Elizabeth Eble, born 19 Feb.
1771, baptized 21 April 1771. The witnesses are John Peter Ebele and Maria Elizabeth Kuntz.
In John Epley's (b. 1765) Revolutionary War Pension Record, FHL Film #970931 (Application
date 9 July 1834) he states that his father is Matthias Epley. The other children I have listed for
Matthias: Anna Margaretha, Jacob, Daniel, and Peter are NOT PROVEN. Much circumstantial
evidence points towards them being siblings of John, because they all migrate to N. Carolina
together as close neighbors and do several leagal transactions with each other.
PARENTS:
The will of John Epley, York County, Pennsylvania Wills, FHL #22133. States that his wife is
Rosina and their eldest son if Matthias and their youngest son is Hans Peter.
MILITARY SERVICE:
During the Revolutionary War private Matthias Epley (Epli) served several militia tours: Oct. 10,
1781-Dec. 10, 1781 in Captain Andrew Foreman's Co., guarding Convention prisoners at
Camp Security near Yor, and again Dec. 7, 1781-Feb. 7, 1782 in Captain John Wampler's Co.
These are probably the dates for John Epley's service as a substitute for his father Matthias.
Matthias Epley was drafted for the Revolutionary War but had his oldest son, John Epley serve
in his place. John was stationed three miles East of the town of York, PA. where he served his
fathers six month assignment, this was in the spring of 1782. At the end of this six month
period, Matthias Epley brought to the camp a George Leonard and persuaded his son, John
to serve three months in hi stead (I believe this George Leonard name is actually George
Leonard Epley, who appears to be related). John served a total of nine months of service as
            a guard during the Revolutionary War. Archives, Service 6, Vol. 2, pg. 643, 649, 746, 815.
TAX LISTS:
Matthias is listed on the Tax Lists of Manheim Township, York County, PA. in 1771, 1779, 1780,
and 1790. In the 1779 Tax List it shows Matthias as owning no land, negros, or horses, but he
did own two cattle and was taxed $10. He is living next to his father John who owned 100 acres
and 7 cattle. In 1780 Matthias is listed with two cattle. The 1788 Tax List of Manheim Twp.
shows Matthias as owning 112 acres of land, no horses, two cows, no negros or grist mills.
CENSUS:
1790 Census of York County, Pennsylvania, Matthias Apley was listed as a resident of Manheim
Township. His house hold had two males over the age of 16 which included the head of the
family, two younger males under the age of 16, and two females including the head of the family.
In 1795 Matthias is listed as a resident in Paradise Township, York County, PA. but he does not
appear in the county in later census records.
LAND:
On feb. 2, 1788 there was a Sheriff's Sale of Matthias Apple's estate. Matthias apparently owed
Michael Zimmer a debt of 186 pounds and 19 shillings. In the document it states that sheriff
John Edie did "seize the estate of Matthias Apple and improvement and Tract of Land situated
in Manheim Township (York Co., PA) containing one hundred and thirty acres more or less
adjoining lands of George Apple, Samuel Wiltison and others." Source: FHL film 022106
            book 2E, pg. 423.
OCCUPATION:
Matthias was a Yeoman as stated in the document of the Sheriff's Sale of estate for Matthias
            Apple.

PARENTS-SIBLINGS: I don't know yet who any of Anna Maria's family are.
Some possibilities might be the following people: Jacob Ritter is
listed in the 1783 Tax List of residents living in the town of Hanover
Heidelberg Township, York County, Pennsylvania. Jacob household
consists of two persons and no other property, his valuation was listed
as 60 poounds. In the 1790 Census of Heidelberg Twp., York County, PA
lists Jacob Riter with one male over the age of 16 including the head
of family. Also in the 1790 Census of Mallen, Manheim & Tyrone
Townships, York County, Pa. it lists a Michael Rittar as one male over
the age of 16 including the head of family, four males under the age
of 16 and five females including the head of family. In the Wills of
York County, PA. there is a letter of administration to _____Ritter
on the estate of Fredrick Ritter dated April 12th 1750.

CHILDREN-SPOUSE:
1789 Tax List--shows John Epley (single) of Manheim Twp, York, Pa.
1790 Census of Manheim Twp, York County, Pennsylvania.
1800 & 1810 Census of Lincoln County, North Carolina.
1840 & 1850 Census of Perry County, Tennessee.
In the 1789 Tax List is lists only one John Epley who is a
single man. This couldn't be John Epley Sr. because his wife Rosina
is still alive. Then on the 1790 Census of Manheim Township, York,
Pennsylvania it shows 1 Male over the age of 16 who John Epley, the
head of the household, 1 male under the age of 16, and only 1 female
who is probably his wife. Now this could either be John Epley Sr. with
his wife Rosina, and maybe a grandson?, or it has to be John Epley who
is age 25 with a wife and son. They are living next to Matthias Epley
and Peter (Hans Peter) Epley. It appears that he might have married
in Pennsylvania and then moved to North Carolina with a wife and
children, or else he lived with Sarah Barnes until the 1800's when he
finally married her. The 1800 census of Lincoln County, North
Carolina lists only the heads of households by name. In 1800 John's
household consisted of himself, age 26-45, a female age 16-45, and 3
males under age 10 and one female under age 10.
In the Lincoln County, North Carolina Bastardy Bonds and Records it
states that in the year 1797---the State vs John Aply (John signs in
German) on the complaint of Sarah Burns/Barnes. In the year 1800--
(the male's name is left blank on the abstract) on the complaint of
Sarah Burns. Apparently John and Sarah probably married around the
year 1800 after Sarah Burns/Barnes pushed a complaint in court about a
child or children being born out of wedlock. On Dec. 31, 1801 John
sells land and on the deed it states his wife is "Seraha" (Sarah).
Yet in the Emanuel's Lutheran Church, Lincolnton, N. Carolina it
lists a John Apley and wife Sarah_____, had a son Andreas baptized on
Oct. 22, 1794; daughter Catharina born Jan. 14 and baptized April 10,
1796. If you look closely at this source, it is a combination of
records from Lincoln County. It could be that the mother is not actually
named on the church record, but possibly only the father. It would be
wonderful if we could look at the actual church records Source book:
"German Speaking People West of the Catawba River in N. Carolina
       1750-1800" by Lorena S. Eaker.
Obviously Sarah could not be the mother of all these children. It
would mean that Sarah would start bearing children in 1790 all the way
to 1822. That is 32 child bearing years. If Sarah had her first child
at age 16 and her last child at age 48 years, then maybe she could be
the mother of all these children.
The only children that we can PROVE that are John's are Andreas,
and Catharina from the Emanuel Lutheran Church records. All the other
children are only an educated guess and are NOT PROVEN. The following
children: John, Hannah, Christener, and Daniel, were taken from marriage
records of Lincoln & Burke counties, N. Carolina. They were the only
Epley's unaccounted for after the other Epley names were matched as
children of Jacob, Peter, and Daniel the brothers of John Epley. The
children: David, Porter, and Peter were added as John's children
because they are living next door to John Epley in Perry County, Tenn.
They are either children from another marriage (Sarah Barnes would be
too old to have these children) or they are John's grandsons.
I can't find John Epley on the 1810 Census, but on the 1820 Census
of Burke County, North Carolina; John is listed as being age 45 or over,
his wife is age 45 or over, and they have 3 males under the age of 10,
and 1 male between age 16-26, also 2 females under age 10, 3 females
between age 10-16, and 1 females ages 16-26. The 3 little boys under
the age of 10 could be David, Porter, and Peter.
MILITARY SERVICE: Archive, Service 6, Vol.2 pg. 643, 649, 746, 815.
Taken from the pension record of John Epley for service as a guard
       in the Revolutionary War.
